I'm looking in to getting a generator, maybe a pto model, but I have a few questions. Is an Allis Chalmers WD large enough to run one? Do these run at idle speeds? I see these advertised at farm sales and I thought one of these would be handier than a free standing unit. I also thought I would backfeed it through the welder outlet in the workshop. My power comes to a yardpole before coming to the house so I could pull the fuses there and have no chance of backfeeding into the power lines. Any comments on this setupwould be appreciated. Thanks

Backfeeders are Darwin Award candidates. Our REA will terminate service to anyone who uses a generator without a pole-mounted double-throw switch. No time to be cheap when another's life is at stake.

The size of tractor depends on the load you put on it. I have pulled my 15000 KVA witha 230 IH when wielding, and it would open the governer up when you struck an arc. I have pulled it with my 460D with 2 houses and a milk barn on it tractor was fully loaded.

I agree with the post about the the transfer switch... I just installed a 30kw generac with auto transfer... sweet... auto exercise, auto switch over... I love it..

Before I had a surplus military 7kw unit with a 100 amp double pole manual transfer switch... (the brand is a RONK)It"s sitting on my workbench in the way . If you"re interested drop me an email and let"s talk... I"m in Birmingham, Al.. It"s about a 200 dollar switch and has been thrown about 3 times... I"ll make you a good deal on it if you"re interested...

You can get a double through box with the switch up you are on line and down on alt. in the middle off. I would recomend this for safety. it has a line with a plug to hook up with to the alt. This is about the only thing Electric co's reconize.

I concur, double throw 3 phase disconnect. Before I made a move at it I would contact my electric co. provider for their Gold book on how they want it. In this case they are the authority having jurisdiction.

The electrical inspectors, emergency response personal, prosecutor have all heard these words. "It was only temporary, I knew what I was doing, I don't know how that happened, I wish I had done it right, etc." Nobody is too smart or too careful and is always able to avoid making mistakes. I just about got blown away with 4160V about 4 o'clock one Sunday morning night shift. Besides a transfer switch is just a few bucks, so what.

You asked for a few comments, so take mine for what they are worth. I'm sure there will be some complaints about them. First of all, backfeeding works fine but is not legal according to National Code. A transfer switch is required. Also, in regard to backfeeding putting linemen's lives in danger - seems like hogwash to me. I was a lineman 35 years ago, and my dad did it seventy years ago. We treated all lines as hot. Those that didn't sometimes got burned or killed. Nowdays, there are MORE saftety precautions, not less. In my area, all lines get a ground-wire clamp attached to them before they can be worked on. Also - again - in regard to backfeeding. If by chance, you energized a line back through the grid - the demand would be so great that your generator would immediately trip its breaker. Now, in regard to running the generator at low speeds - no - it won't work. An AC generator - PTO or stand-alone genset - must run a designated RPM in order for the Hertz cylces to be correct. That is why DC generators are getting popular now. Honda, Yamaha, et. al. sell them as their "Inverter" series. They are DC generators run through a full-wave inverter. Subsequently, they can provide power at any RPM and still maintain the proper Hertz cycle. So they will only rev up just enough to meet the load. Also keep in mind that most AC generators do not replicate grid-type power exactly, but come close. Grid AC power that is normally referred to as "120 VAC" actually runs up and down at 170 VAC, back and forth, 60 times a second. Many generators only run up to 150 VAC. For most things, you'd never notice. But, certain items, especially standard battery chargers, won't work well with that type of power. And, you can check a generator with a simple volt-meter - since it only gives you an "average" reading - not a voltage peak reading. A general rule of thumb - most permanent mount large generators put out proper peak voltage, and most jobsite portable generators do not - EXCEPT - the aforementioned inverter series DC generators. They put out just about perfect power.

I'd like to take issue with one of your comments... specifically.. an 'average' reading vm.

While I've seen plenty of 'peak' reading meters.. and a few less peak to peak scop type meters, the vast overwhelming majority of consumer grade vom's just read RMS..( root mean square ). can't say that I've seen any consumer grade equipment that read average... though it wouldn't be hard to calculate, if you know RMS, peak, pr Peak to Peak value... etc..

Most cheaper consumer type meters actually �read� peak voltage but are calibrated to show RMS voltage. The better ones like fluke actually read RMS and show RMS voltage. Although they even have trouble with some types of waveforms. There is a limit as to the wave form shape deviation from a sin wave that there can be and the meter still read right.
The very expensive meters are able to give true RMS readings with just about any wave shape.

The conversion from peak to RMS by the .707 factor times peak only works for a pure sin wave. A complex or dirty sin wave that comes out of some generators gives erroneous readings.

Average voltage is not really used for much although there are some meters that �read� the voltage as average voltage but are usually calibrated to show RMS.

The old moving vane type voltmeter actually �reads� average voltage and the scale is of course usually calibrated in RMS.

My point was, as you demonstrate.. most meters the average joe can go pick up at a store are going to show him a reading in RMS values. Doesn't matter what the meter element is actually measuring... the important issue is what the display is calibrated in for joe average user... and that is overwhelmingly RMS...

I also think you are not giving credit to more modern generator output cleanliness.

I've scope'd quite a few gennies, ranging from small honda 1000w units to 10kw hobart welder /gennies.and my and my stepfathers 12 and 24 kw pto gennies. All had good sine waves, and actually had better voltage stabilization that the utility, as long as you kept the load within the range supplied by the genny.

I did side by side tests on utility vs my pto gen, and utility vs a gas powered 10kw gen on various motor loads, including a well pump. I must say.. the voltage stabilization was far superior with the genny's. Didn't capture any distorted wave forms, and couldn't find any 'noise' on them either.

If you are looking for noise..look at UPS and Inverter based systems. Even the high dollar ones tend to kick some noise and funny approximated sine waves, and many other sinusidal waves. Most devices are fairly tolerant of some wave form variation these days.. but I can remember when ferro-ressonant power supplies were in use.. they did not like approximated or otherwise stepped sine wave outputs.. including cheap square and triangle -ish type wave forms..

I'm not sure exactly what I stated that you "take issue" with. I was trying to avoid a lengthy technical and esoteric discussion. I was making a general statement considering this is not a forum for electrical engineers. I've been involved in many solar-electric hybrid installations. These usually require a genset, battery charger, DC charger controller, inverter, solar array, battery bank, somtime grid-tie, etc. This is where I first encountered the issue of low voltage peaks from many gensets. Many would not run conventional battery chargers properly. To compound the issue, it was sometimes difficult to buy a new one and be sure it would do the job - because many companies do not offer the needed specs. Neither a five dollar multimeter or a $100 root-mean-square voltmeter will provide the answer. So, many installers started keeping records and publishing lists showing which generators were known to work, and which ones did not. I got so I'd carry a cheap battery charger with me, and check a genset that way. If I plugged it in, and it only worked at 1/2 or 1/4 capacity, I knew the voltage output was not correct. I found that many gensets only peak at 150 VAC, and many chargers will only work at 1/4 capacity at that level. I called one big-name distributor tyring to get specs - and he scolded me - claiming that all their gensets put out "steady AC power." Isn't that an oxy-moron? Voltage that is steady yet alternating at the same time? It is not so much a problem anymore for the following reasons. #1 Many installers are using voltage enhancers which work with some inferior gensets. #2 There are better battery chargers being used now that work with a wider voltage range rather than just clip the top of the peak.
#3 The newer inverter series of DC generators work great and don't have the voltage problems. Many times though, for a permanent installation of a genset, and older, low RPM, water-cooled unit is desired - like a Delco/Detroit 1200 RPM unit, or a Kohler 1800 RPM unit. Most of these large units - usually over 12KW, work great, but I've found a few that do not. Many hybrid installations only need a 6K genset to do the job. So, many times the cheaper portable type gensets are bought for the purpose, and many if not most do not work properly. From what I've experienced lately, there have been no problems with the inverter series DC units.

My previous post exactly spelle dout what I had issue with. You were refering to 'average' reading vom's. As has been hashed out, most vom's display in rms. And as has been said.. you don't see too many consumer grade vom's that will display in 'average'. My issue was that mentioning the 'average' may confuse the issue with electrical newby's. ( regaurdless of the fact that a meter element may measure average voltage.... the display calibration is the issue.. )

I never said it would. I use a quite expensive waveform reading o-scope style vom... not a 5$ unit.. or a 100$ unit.. more on line with lab grade equipment. It's the only way to get a good feeling for your power output. That way you can see peak / peaktopeak, and frequency, look at the sine wave, and looke dfor dropped or distorted waves, and look for noise harmonics.

If you are having problems with cheapy battery chargers.. look for triac based units. They can compensate fo undervoltage peaks by just leaving the 'on-time' a little longer. Triac based power supplies, for dc power generation are way tolerant of cruddy utility. Most good computer supplies can maintain 5v and 12v power rails ( at full current) with as little as 90v on the incoming ac line due to the way the triacs 'sample' the incoming wave.

tractor-forum community. Depending on how specific (or narrow) you wish to be with
word connotations versus denotations - or "titles" - perhaps I qualify. I've got degrees in
electrical engineering and cultural anthropology - but I work, professionally, at neither.
So, am I a grease-monkey, a bum, or an engineer? I've got two sons with similar degrees
- and both are working engineers - one civilian and one Naval - and they both plug into
this forum on occasion. I've also been contacted by a few engineers from this forum, who
have helped me with a few problems in past, including a very knowledgeable large
generator designer from General Electric. To be specific, with your complaint. You say you "spelled it out", so I must be missing
the obvious. Within my incipient statement in regard to "average" voltage readings, I
referred to a "simple voltmeter", not a VOM. To many, there is a difference. In reference
to battery chargers, I mentioned a "standard battery charger." Now, with my mention of
an "average voltage", I used the words with the most common dictionary meaning -
nothing more. If an AC line is jumping back and forth with 170 volts at its peaks and
valleys, and your hand-held voltmeter is displaying 120 VAC, then it is providing an
average or composite reading. I still am a little lost with your problem. Semantics
maybe? In regard to the problems I encountered with solar-electric residential installations - the
battery charger is often built in with the inverter - e.g. the Trace/Xantrex being a popular
model. The early generation units (that are still sold new), the "DR" series, have on-board
battery chargers that will not work well with many gensets. The updated "SW" series uses
a more advanced charger that is NOT so sensitive - but costs more. Maybe my use of the
phrase "standard battery charger" is a not a perfect description - but come on . . . This is
a tractor forum, and I think to many, they know what I mean. I can read off a list of many higher-tech chargers that are much more sophisticated than a
auto-parts store or Walmart charger - but the latter is what I was referring to. If someone has such a charger - often used to charge car or tractor batteries, and tries to
use it by plugging into their 4400 watt Homelite or 5000 watt Generac, it's very likely it
will not work anywhere near at it's rated output. Yet, many voltmeters will read exactly
the same voltage plugged into one of those gensets or the wall plug.

For clarity sake.. here are the numbers. (I posted 1 incorrect number in my last post.)

For sine wave voltage relationships:

E max = Peak

.707 E max = RMS ( called Effective voltage )
1.414 E rms = E max

1.57 E average = Emax
.637 E max = E average

That's where my issue was. You were intermixing electrical and non electrical terms together.. specifically, the word "average" which as you can see, is actually .637 Peak...

Maybee something changed from when you took electronics till I took electronics.

If you have 170v peak.. then the RMS reading is 120.. That's not an average reading.. average is another figure.. .414 peak I believe..

My point was.. By you intermixing very specific technical terms like Peak, RMS and AVERAGE, and then mix them in with 'common' language as you say.. then the term "AVERAGE" is going to be confused.. just like it is now... with you using the term to mean 'composite' reading.. .. when in reality.. 'AVERAGE" is another power calculation, just like RMS is, pased on PEAK votlage... that's where the issue is. You are using a common term in a technical discussion that has the 'term'.. but has a different (specific) meaning tied to it. That's where the confision comes in.

Pike Electric operates in 18 Eastern states doing contract transmission line work. Very reputable company. After Katrina, one of their linemen was killed in Alabama by power fed into the grid from a homeowner's portable generator. Criminal charges resulted.

I don't know anything about Pike Electric, but it sounds like the homeowner and the lineman both screwed up. If a homeowner was feeding current back though a transmission line, he deserves criminal prosecution. If the line had been grounded though, as required by most if not all companies, it would not have happened. My dad was a foreman for Public Service Elec. & Gas and he lost three lineman during his lifetime from 1930 - 1975. All three times they had made errors, and my father was held responsible since he was the foreman. One problem though is the foreman is on the ground and cannot see every move, nor control every action a lineman takes up in the bucket or on the pole. When I was a lineman I sometimes got lazy and worked without my insulating sleeves or gloves - which was a violation and was stupid. I also made unintentional mistakes. I got zapped or burned a few times - but obviously, not killed. I spent a nice sunny day working on new 13KV lines that were supposed to be dead - i.e. not energized yet. I sat on them and ate lunch and later, was showing off and doing pull-ups from them. Found out later they had been on the entire time. The reality is that human error always exists, in our actions and our equipment designs. We can be as safe as we can - and that's about it. We also tend to go overboard with regulations - when enforcement, not new regs is often the issue. No matter what, accidents happens.

You're right, accidents do happen. They absolutely do, unfortunately.

As I read your post, and since you are alive to talk about it, I can imagine you doing pullups, and I can chuckle.

As a phone guy, I go into generating stations plenty. One time turns out my splice was under a 34KV vault that ran... out in a 138KV yard, behind a 34KV cable tray a foot above 3" of flowing water. The water table was higher than the bottom of that vault, and any given day of the year, there's 3" of flowing water in that vault, 24/7. I didn't care for that, so got a plant operator to take a look. He trudges through the water with a hand probe and starts...probing those cables. I didn't care for that either since an arc would've gotten us both, or I might've had to watch him explode. Man I wanted to climb out and run, but wasn't going to leave him down there by himself. He said "they're safe", and I didn't care for that either since I had to crawl over the tray to get to the splice, so we went back to the electrical maint shop and he grabbed several 17K rated mats, figuring that if he stacked them (17K + 17K +...), we'd be ok. Mmm, I still didin't care for that, but he stacked them and crawled over them himself. He was part of a pool that hit on the lottery and was getting $50K for the next 20 years on top of his scale for working. I thought about it a few and figured that under those conditions, no way he'd chance that, so I reluctantly climbed over too, and fixed my splice. Never tried that again, never will. A year or two later while leaving the plant, I saw a sign on the fence "In loving memory of our brother..." (wasn't him), and turned around and went back to ask about... He was up high in the plant working on... and the buss wasn't tagged or pulled and locked out several levels down below, and I don't need to tell you what happened. Mmm. Was a well experienced sparky with 20 or 25 years in that fossil, and friend and neighbor of mine. Accidents happen. No matter how safe one is or isn't, they sure do.

You're on the right track with your idea, although a transfer switch is still the only legal way to put a generator into your system. A pto generator runs at near wide open throttle. The rpm at which your pto is running at rated speed. Consult your owner's manual for the exact engine speed. My Kubota runs 2516 rpm to make the pto run at 540 in it's low speed and 858 in it's high speed. To answer your question about the WD, yes, your tractor could run a pretty big pto generator. Not sure how much horsepower they make, but a 10 kw generator needs about 21 hp. You could probably make about 20 kw. If you tried to plug in more load than the tractor can handle, it would be like hooking on to a six bottom plow. As soon as you drop the plow, the engine would stall. I have built several 3-point hitch generators, and there are a few pictures on Link to give you some ideas. I would also be willing to quote the project for you, but would not be willing to ship it. You would need to come to North East, MD to pick it up.

Tim, you are not far from dave reed ,the otto gas engine man. I went to fair hill sunday to pick up some honing mandrels for my honing machine .One of my customers has a crane and lives across from the old hencle & mccoy yard on harrisville rd . I'm on prospect rd near whiteford ( off 136 ).

Most smaller tractor driven generators are made for 540 rpm pto speed. Some Belarus, Deutz and grey market tractors have dual speed pto. A person can put them in 1000 pto speed and then slow the engine down to get the 540 speed. I only do this for light pto loads. Backfeeding works but not that safe. The prongs sticking out of the plug are live.
