OT Briggs and Stratton

I know this isn't a tool question but you guys seem to know about everything so hope you can help. I have a cheapie push lawn mower with a 3.5 hp briggs classic engine. Problem is it will use a tank of gas in only a few minutes of mowing. Will still be some gas left in the tank. If I unscrew the filler cap and put back on will run awhile longer. Figure it is something with the carb but don't know what. Any ideas? Thanks for any help.

Thanks for the help. I appreciate it. I will check the gas cap vent and if OK will check the gasket between carb and tank also. I'll treat it to an oil change while I'm at it. The air filter is clean and OK. Thanks again.

Sounds like the vent in the gas cap is plugged causing a vacuum in the tank, not allowing fuel to flow after a while of running. Try cleaning the cap.

Make sure the vent on the cap is working. When it runs the tank will get built up preassure in it and it, will do that if the vent isn't working as it should.

Old, not arguing with you but it should be vacuum on the tank not pressure, and if the vent is not open it will draw a negative then cant get nay more fuel.
The carb draws the fuel with the venturies creating the vacuum, they are not mechanical pumps so they can only get so much then they are done

It can work both ways, heat from the engine can and will cause preassure in the tank and that can and will cause the thing to seem like its useing a lot more gas then it should. But yes your also correct that is can also cause a vacuum which will shut and engine down, but thats not the problem he says he has. Of course another problem he may have is a clogged air filter which will cause them to run rich. I found out about the preasureized gas tank problem the hard way and almost had a gas fire because of it.

try replacing the rubber gasket between the tank and carb.
