Many years ago I tried a digital tach/dwell meter. I couldn't get it to work on a 6 volt positive ground tractor but it did work on a 12 volt car. I tried reversing the connections for positive ground. My conclusion was that it would only work on 12 volt systems.
The ones I have looked at don't mention 6 volt systems. I have even called a couple of sources for meters and asked but, they are just importers of overseas products and don't have a clue other than what the translated manual states. Does anyone have experience using a digital tach/dwell meter on 6 volt positive ground systems.
I will appreciate any knowledgeable comments.

If you really want, you can buy a 6 to 12 volt, DC-DC converter. Or if you're handy with electronics, you can build a simple one. There are several schematics on the internet.

I use my Snap-On digital tac/timing light on my Farmall H with a mag. I clamp the pickup wire around #1 plug wire and power it with my 12v jumper pack.

I have successfully used my digital tach on a 6 volt system. It just picks up the point closings to count and thereby gives revolutions from that. There is one big factor that will nullify this and that is if the motor is using solid wire sparkplug cables, it will cause so much interference that the meter will give wild readings and will never settle down. The only solution is to use an analog meter or to use carbon core cables while making adjustments.

I"ve never heard of one that will work on 6V. A tach (or timing light) with an inductive pickup (the kind that clamps around a spark plug wire) will work if you provide a 12 volt source to power the meter.

Dwell is just another way of measuring the points for the proper gap. A dwell meter actually measures the percentage of time the points are closed & converts that to degrees based on the number of cylinders. Setting the proper point gap will get you plenty close, particularly for a slow turning tractor engine.

don't really know but i would think that it is getting its power for its electronics from the 12 volt source therefore it would not work on 6 volts//JMHO
