I just got a 6ft bushhog squealer, older, pretty beat and in the process of a gearbox rebuild. Theres a piece of chain going from the toplink to the tail end of the mower, is this safe? I was thinking about replacing it with a pipe etc, any ideas?

Seems to be a very common way to do it. There is some tiny danger in the bushhog catching on something & flipping up onto you - or at least damaging the pto shaft, etc. We've had long discussions on that here, & folks fall into 2 camps on it.... ;)

A regular top link isn't good either, as the back wheels will dig in on bumps. Best to have a little hinge bit in the top link, to allow 4" or so of movement, but ridgid enough to keep it from flipping up. Look at picks of new ones & you will get the idea.

Mike I have two of the Squeelers both came new with the chain. If you make it solid you will bend or break something the first ditch you go through.

I have an "Andy 500" that is several years old. The chain has never broken, but the angle iron piece that the chain is welded to has broken twice. The angle piece that the bolt goes through broke where the bolt hole is. When the angle broke, the PTO drive shaft snapped. I have run two pieces of bar stock from the 3 point hitch to the tail of the shreader to prevent that.

I looked at several other shreaders and they have the additional support, and I have not had any problems with the addition.

A bigger problem is occuring with my old shreader and that is a rusted out stump jumper. Seems the stump jumper, after it's filled with grass and weeds, helps hold moisture and over a period of time will rust out the piece. I suggest you inspect under the bushhog and make sure the blades are secure to the stump jumper before engageing the PTO.

Thanks for the input guys, I think I'll just leave the chain alone, My stump jumper is rusty, had some cracks in it, But I straightened it out and welded it all up with the ol' buzzbox. Wire wheeled it and threw some paint on it so it wouldnt get worse. Also cleaned up the bottom side of the deck and painted as well, trying to preserve my investment. LOL This will pretty much be restored by the time its done. Thanks for the help.
