I use a 3-M "Roloc" disk in an angle die grinder? Works miracles on points (Almost mirror shine) and does no damage and leaves no particles imbedded in points....

If your married, go in the bathroom and look for a "everlasting" finger nail file. Don't over do it.

That brings back old memories, of my Mom getting all over me for ruining her nail files , on lawn mower points... As a teen, I had bought 20 or so junk mowers to fix & sell, I got at least a dozen of them running, then sold the junk ones for more than I gave for the entire bunch... About that time, the Diamond nail files came out, she bought one, & warned me not to even think about it... LOL... I never understood why women could not just cut their nails with a pair of wire cutters, like we do... I guess that explains why I am still single...

I always use a small piece of emory cloth and a piece of cardboard from a parts box. You emory them then slide the card board acroos them a couple time

After filing or cleaning, I have found that polishing with a strip of kraft grocery bag does an excellent job of polishing to a very smooth finish.

Napa used to have sandpaper up to 800grit.
Get a piece of 400 grit and go at it.
One sheet should last you a lifetime.

Auto paint supply shops should have waterproof paper to 1500 grit.

Don't use sandpaper if you want the points to last. Sandpaper sheds abrasive as its used, which will end up embedded in the points. Emery cloth does too, but not nearly as bad.

Fingernail file works just fine if you can't find a real points file. Just make sure you don't use that file for anything else that could leave grease on the points.

Do yourself a favor and don't offer to give it back when you're done with it.

A matchbook striker works well for polishing the point faces. Used it many times. I do have a point file(about 3 inches long) made by Snap-on Tools. Came in a distributor service tool set that had point feeler gauge, file, distributor tower wire brush, spark plug gauges, and a few other items.
