My dads new truck has this. '05 f-250 superduty deisle. I find it works very well all by it self. it has a pressure sensor in the antilock valve body and meters trailer brakes in proportion with actual braking. it has a small bit of adjustment and is fuse protected in the main fuse panel. If it does not light up automaticly when trailer is plugged in, bad plug on truck, or wiring on trailer does not have complete circut, check all connections and ohm all wheel magnets for open or shorts which will also set unit in default. They will work automatically if everything is in working order. your owners manual should have a complete section covering this. My dads does. hope this helps.
