Newbie at Hydraulic cylinders

I have 2 tractors that each produce 1000 PSI and 6 GPM. I am seeing cylinders listed on ebay for 2000psi. Does this mean that it requires 2000 to run or would 1000 run the cylinder albeit slower that if you were producing 2000. What about the GPM? Most cylinders do not have this requirement listed.

When you look at PSI you are looking at pounds of force per square inch. Pumps have a maximum PSI (Pounds per square inch) and GPM(gallons per minute). Your absolute maximum possible pressure will be determined by this but the relief valve will determine your maximum operating pressure.

So if you have 1000 PSI pressure in your system, you can used cylinders rated as low as that or higher. To determine what those cylinders can do, determine their diameter and then take half that to find the radius. The area A=(pi x r x r).

So if your cylinder is 4" across that is a radius of 2 and an area of about 12 square inches. If you pump 1000 PSI into that system that cylinder will push 12000 lbs. PSI X Area.

Most of the time a rateing like that means that is the top PSI that they can handle. On cylinders the rateing is what they can handle and as far as GPM yep you guessed it the lower the GPM the slower they work. Aslo the bigger the diameter the more push they will have for the given PSI. Or in other words a cylinder that is 1 inch in diameter will not lift near as much as a cylinder the is 4 inches in diameter at say 1000PSI

The 2,000 psi rating means that the cylinder will stand up to that much pressure. Your 1,000 psi. system should operate these cylinders just fine.
