ok, i'm beat. What is the right way to prime a water pump? I've got a 3.5hp briggs powered Teel water pump that's about 20years old. Once primed it will pump well, but i have trouble getting it to prime. i'm trying to pump out my cistern, so i need to pull water up about 6' to the pump. last year, i just stuck a piece of PVC down in the hole, dumped water in the top of the pump, and repeated until it took, or i got tired of trying. last week i bought a foot valve and put on the bottom of the PVC. now i can force water up to the pump through the suction line by moving it up and down, but it still won't take a prime. what might i be doing wrong, or what could i do to improve my success?

Ended up had a clamp on the intake hose a little loose. Tightened it up, and we're off to the races.

down side is, the line running from the well to the cistern is a little plugged up it seems, so the cistern didn't fill over night. so no water today.

story of my life, i think i'm fixing one thing, turn my back, and something else breaks.

You need to fill the pump with water and check to see if an inlet line is cracked, I had this happen to me and the line was cracked and it wouldnt pump.

Not to be a smart alec, but maybe its because the pump is 20 yrs old. Your problem is why I went to submersables. good luck.

well, we'll check all the connections and give it another shot. I figured that foot valve would fix things right up, but no such luck just yet.

Sounds like you ARE priming the pump, and with the foot valve, it should prevent water from going down the pipe from the pump back into the cistern. We did something like that on an irrigation system -- replaced that anti-siphon valve -- only to find that we had an air link on a fitting. Might check that too...

Make sure there is no air leaking on the suction side of the pump.
