do a google search on " homemade log splitter plans "
Its been my experence that every time I try to make a homemade _____ _____ (fill in the blank) it turns out that someone has them cheaper than what I spent to make it. Hard to beat mass production.

I have a home built splitter that will split anything. It's a 8hp two stage pump and a 7"x48" cylinder it will cut off an 8in maple sideways. no joke. It was built in the early seventys and has split for my dad and two uncles when I was a kid and now for me my brother and a close freind. It has split roughly 2000 full cords of wood or mabey more. Two safety features it should have regardless of construction when making the plunger use some way of securing it to the beam so it can't climb I have seen an old one at an old engine show that the wood had come flying out the top. I wish I had some pictures of mine to put online to explain. Then mount one cylinder pin vertcal and one horizontal it takes the side force from all directions off the cylinder to keep it from breaking. That was the only thing not done to mine and you can see the cylinder bow especially if the block wasn't cut square. the only reason it has not broke is sheer size. It's the main lift cylinder off a petty bone loader. Hope this can help.

try Lowes, home depot, tractor supply --- personnaly i believe you can buy a factory made unit for very little more than you can build one - unless you have a free pump, engine, tank, cylinder, laying around. have a neighbor that built one several years ago - 5 hp gas engine, pump, tank, i beam for rail - i bougth a 6 hp at tractor supply at the time for a little less than $700. it will split circles around the home made. been my experience that the majority that build a unit will skimp somewhere to save $50 building it. if you do plan to build just go to above mentioned places and take your tape measure!!
