I'm replacing the timing gears of my Ford 4.9,6cyc engine and need to remove the large gear from camshaft, its a keyed pressed on gear. Whats the best way to remove this gear? I have pullers but none that will work in this place. Anyone make their own puller or have a easy remove idea? Thanks

i have changed steel gears without pulling the cam.but the best way is to take the cam out and use a shop press to pull off and put back on. because there is a lack of a good place to put a puller on it, taking a sharp chisle and splitting the gear is how i did it.you can drill a few holes to weaken it.then put an all thread rod in the front of the cam and pull on new gear with a heavy nut and washer plate.but pulling the cam out is much safer way. lucas

Most truck engines came with a fiber cam gear. We found in our brush chippers the fiber cam gears didn't last long, so switched to metal gears. The trucks used fiber gears so you won't hear as much noise. I would install a metal gear in the truck. About any auto parts store has them, I got mine at NAPA. Good Luck

Remove camshaft from engine and use a 20 to 30 ton shop press to remove and install. They are definitley a press on gear. Make sure new gear is square with camshaft or you can break cam during press operation. Don't forget safety gear (glasses gloves etc)
