No sparking battery charger

I bought 2 new battery chargers to keep my tractor batteries up.....Went to hook one up to my Farmall H 6v....I always strike the - and + clamps togeather...watch for a spark and see the needle jump....did that ...nothing, no spark no needle movement.....tried 6 and 12v...low and high amp. settings.....put it on 55 amp. boost....plenty of sparks and needle movement.....tested both chargers...nothing....
what do you think will they charge ?..... hooked one up at 3amp 6v, but I don't think the charger is charging....

The "boost" setting bypasses the overcurrent limit. That's why it would spark on "boost" but not on "charge".

As others have said, quit shorting out your charger. It does no good, other than to show that the charger WAS good BEFORE you shorted it out.

Why would you intentionally put a dead short across a charger? That's like checking to see if there's gas in the tank with a match! A $5 multimeter will tell you if it's charging. test battery voltage before plugging in the charger, then after. If it rises, it's charging. Shorting the charger leads is just creating sparks very likely in the vicinity of a battery (explosive environment) and/or risking frying internal parts on the charger.

As already noted, most new ones need to see some battery voltage to begin output of voltage themselves, safety feature. If you have old chargers that did this and they failed, causing you to buy a new one, its probably that they failed due to your "sparking", the diodes in them probably failed. It certainly isn't good for them.

Most new chargers nowadays are "smart" and won't charge unless the leads are correctly connected to a battery with at least some "juice" in it.

They WON'T spark when you touch the leads together. "Boost" is likely an exception to that.

Got a "smart" charger also,Completly electronic high frequency,They will not put out any voltage until you hook them to the battery.But note:: they will not activate if the battery is below 2.5 to 3 volts and they can affect other electronics if placed too close to them because of the high freq they put out. TOUCHING CABLES TOGETHER ON A CONVENTIONAL BATTERY CHARGER IS DEATH ON THE RECTIFIERS AND TRANSFORMER "AVOID IT AT ALL COSTS!!"

When I say spark the charger,I am not talking about frying them....two of my chargers are at least 25 years old ....sparking hasent hert them.....my question has been answered ...the new ones are differn't....how do you charge a battery with less than a 3amp charge? thanks Don

Don, in answer to your question "how do you charge a battery with less than a 3 amp charge?", the answer is that the charger is going to adjust its charging rate to what the battery needs. If the battery is almost fully charged, 3 amps will be plenty. On the other hand, if the battery is fully discharged, the charger will limit the current to protect itself. You should see the current increase as the battery starts to take a charge, then decrease when its fully charged.

Your older chargers have selenium rectifiers. they can stand your sparking habit.New chargers use silicon rectifiers that will short circuit if you short the output leads.I repair battery chargers and can tell you plain and simple, dont do this.Using a boost type is risky.Silicon rectifiers see the starter as a dead short.
