Help! water pressure system problem

The water pump which supplies my mother's house was cycling on at short intervals. It seems to be a bladder tank, so I fumbled around until learning how to add air to the bladder. That done, the pump still comes about every ten minutes and runs for one minute or so.

The static level in the well is only about 36' and the foot valve is down in the well, capped by a cast iron hand pump installed with a foot valve in the same hole, so I'd like to avoid pulling the whole mess, if I can help it.

Is there any other cause but leaking foot valve clamps if I have eliminated other leak sources?

I should have asked you guys sooner; Wilkipedia is not much help on this topic.

Thanks,

Rod

And the problem turned out to be.... in reply to Rod in Smiths Falls, ON, , 04-15-2006 13:47:35
A leaking toilet. A wooden spoon under the float and the pump stayed silent for hours. Now all I have to do is replace the guts of the flushing mechanism.

While a bit embarrassing, it's a lot less effort than pulling the foot valve.

I know, "Water runs downhill and payday's on Friday," but a lot of plumbing is trickier than it looks.

More than likely the foot valve is leaking.
You have to set the pressure a few pounds below the ON pressure of the water pump with no pressure on the bladder.

Oops! I set it at 38 pounds in the bladder, and the on pressure is thirty. I'll check that this morning.

Could be --- the bladder in your tank has a leak, and will not perform like it should, if the tank is more then 5 years old, most likely the Bladder is no good... replace it with a new tank with bladder, and it will give you another 5 years of service...

If the pump is submersed, I would put a check valve in the pump piping near the tank and forget the foot valve.

That's an interesting idea and would eliminate a lot of lifting, though I only have about 18" of vinyl (two lines) coming through the stone wall, so it would have to be down the well where there is room. I'd need two check valves, though.

It's a jet pump with the lower half down the well and the foot valve attached, a deep well application.

Hi. Did you drain the water out of the tank before you added the air. when there isn't any air in the tank keeps filling with water, so when you put the air back in the tank there is no place for the water to go. Shut off the water to the tank and open the value to let the water out, then put air to the tank to get extra water out of it. Then shut off all the values and put the air in the tank. Should work then. Hope this works for you.

Gus:

That's exactly what I learned how to do, after much fumbling. It still is losing pressure. What's the next step?

The draw pipr may have a hole in it, causing the loss of presure back down into the well. Had to replace an original 1 1/4" draw pipe with new cvpc(?) pipe about a yr ago. also replaced pump at same time it also getting old.
my thoughts only.
