I just got a new chain for my Stihl 041 Farmboss.

My question is, just how tight should the chain be? Are there any good rules of thumb?

My dad's rule was that he should be able to see the bottom of three teeth above the bar when pulling up firmly on the chain.

Here's a couple of manuals from Stihl that should help you.

I"ll share with you how I use to ajust chain. First I"d take up most of the chain slack. Then , while holding up on the end of the bar(on the sides of course)rotate the chain around the bar some. Then move the chain backwards , and again forwards til you find the point where the chain droops below the bar the most. Again , while holding up on the tip of the bar , turn the ajusting screw till the chain(Not the drivers) just touches the bar. That"s about perfect. While still holding up on the bar , tighten the nuts. Should be good to go.

The Husky sales guy said I should be able to fit a dime under the chain when adjusted properly.MMMmmm think I better read the owners manual after thinking about the hitting the leg deal below.Make sure he knew what he was talking about.

From what I remember from my owners manual with a roller tip bar they just want the chain to pull around easy but no play. And to do this you also have to do it after warmed up and loosen it back up before it cools down and bends the crank.

I sell stihl saws, and the way i do it is to pull up on the chain in the middle of the bar, and be able to move it up to the point where you can just about see the bottom tips of the chain. When doing this, you do not want to see the bottom of the teeth because the chain will pop off of the bar and slap your leg, luckily i was wearing protective chaps when i learned this lesson.

That's how I adjust mine, also. But the bigger question is, if you are so new to chainsaw useage that you don't know how to adjust the chain, why didn't the seller cover the basics when you picked it up? A chainsaw can be a very dangerous tool in the hands of an inexperienced operator. Please be careful.

I tighten it until I can just pull the chain around the bar easily by hand, with little or no slack, when cold. It will loosen soon enough when you use it.

I have a STIHL model MS310 which is about the same size as a "Farmboss. It has a 20" bar. When I replace my chain I tighten the bar tensioner so that when I grab the chain between my two fingers at the top of the bar, I can pull the chain up between 1/2"to 3/4" then tighten the bar. I usually place a block of wood under the bar at the tip when I adjust the chain. After you adjust the chain, use the saw for a few cuts and repeat the tightening procedure. I've been using STIHL chainsaws for over 40 years. Good saw.
