Do you know of any web sites that explain the best use of the different rods?

Buy a book, keep it by your machine.Marine Corps welding school is a Hobart course;watch a film go to the shop,so Ill say movies work good to learn[even gurls done it good too].But buy a book that you dont care about grease and burn spots.I have Hobart Welding Guide on the top of the welder. That was the book the military gave me.You cant memorize it all and its good to double check stuff. In my opinion old rod goes bad at least 7018 does[without an oven].

Hi Wayne,

For most commerical work using DC you can't beat Lincoln 6010 and Chemtron 7018. Both are the finest electrodes ever made.

For a homeshop using AC look at 6011 and 6013 or 7014 in the Hobart brand. Although I'm not a hobart machine guy they build a decent electrode.

I always bought a few pounds of a new electrode to see if it was what I was wanting. If the rod worked well then I'd buy the larger containers to keep the cost down.

If your wanting tons more electrode info take a look at Lincoln's website under consumables. They list what metals and positions there elcetrodes are certified in.

Hi Wayne,

For detailed, accurate information on choosing and using welding rod you can't do much better than the information in the archives of this forum. T_Bone is the reigning expert in all things welding here. He could, and should, write a book on the subject because he has vast technical knowledge, decades of practical experience, and a clear, direct writing style.

A contributor who hasn't posted here in a few years is Mark KW, another expert with a ton of information about welding. His long posts about when to choose 6010 and when to choose 6011 (if you think it's a simple matter of whether you have an AC only welder, or have DC available, you'll be amazed at what he has to say) as well as his advice about using propane for cutting are about as good as it gets.

Another excellent source of welding information is the 6 video series by Wall Mountain. My local library has the series so check your library to see if they do. Otherwise you can buy them on eBay (or directly from Wall Mountain Company) for about $25 each. I've watched some of the videos in that series more than 20 times. My vertical up welding went from horrible to good after studying and following the advice in their video Arc Welding II.

If you want to e-mail me I'll send you a bug-free attachment of 30 pages of posts of the best advice about welding from the archives of this forum.

All the best, Stan

Thanks Stan,

You know there's not another website like this one as I never seen so much talent in one place on just about any subject one would ever care to discuss. We are truely blessed!

Wayne
Here is a link to a common electrode selection chart.

Link

It has electrode number, description, and settings to help point you in the right direction. Here is a link to a page describing what the numbers mean (6010, 6013 and etc)

Link

If you happen to have a specific question about electrodes feel free to shoot me an email.
