Laminated Post Question

I'm planning a machine shed and would like to make my own posts out of 2x6's laminated together. I'm thinking of using four 2x6's per post, and wondering at what lengths I should splice from treated to regular lumber.

The building will have 10' walls, with probably about 5' in the ground (WI frosts!). Would it work to splice at 6' and 8'? Or should it be staggered more, such as 6', 8' and 10'? The shed will be on a hilltop, so the more strength the better!

What has anyone else seen done? Thanks for the help.

In the north wall in my new plasma building, I made up 2 20', 2 22' and 1 24' laminated poles. 4' in the ground 4 ply 2x8 pressure treated for underground and untreated above ground. The butt joints were 5' and 8' on the pressure treated to keep the untreated above grade. all was liquid nailed together and air nailed with 16D air nails then spiked with 7 " polebarn nails from both sides. what went below grade was sealed with roof tar. Bumped one accidently with the backhoe and it bounced off. One of the other poles in the building had this happen (a 6x6 pt pole) snapped like a pencil and I had to pull it and replace it. Had I had more time and money I would have made all the poles by laminating them.

The liquid nail company recomends using there subfloor adhesive in the large caulking tube. I was told there are more chemicals in the big tube.

All laminated post building I have seen are being built with only 3-2x6s.If your eave height is only 10 feet then three would be enough,in my opinion.The splice isn't as important as the nailing pattern.Drive all laminating nails on an angle in a random fashion.First one way and then another direction.Nail a couple 2x4s this way and then try to pry them apart, then you will see the value of angling the nails.The only way you will get them apart is to pull the nails with a cat's paw.There is no need to use treated lumber above 2 or 3 feet above the ground.Make the center 2x6 shorter at the top to form a socket to set the trusses in.Then bolt the trusses in place.That will build in extra wind resistance in the sidewalls and help absorb some of the wind load on the splices.
Some builders are using two 2x6s and a 2x8 in the center of their posts.That way the nailers(girts) can be nailed flush with the outside of the posts.Makes for a very nice looking wall.

The study reports that the splice length is much more important than the nailing pattern. To quote it:

Without additional butt joint reinforcement, an
overall splice length of 2 ft (0.6 m) is too short to effectively redistribute forces in the immediate vicinity of a butt joint. An overall splice length of at least 3 ft (0.9 m) appears necessary for a three-layer assembly.

The study recommends various nailing patterns and splicing arrangements. None of the nail patterns discuss driving the nails on an angle. The nails are intended to provide dowel bearing strength and thereby prevent inter-layer slippage, not withdrawl strength to prevent the layers from being pulled apart. Separation of the layers is not a big problem in the normal loading of such laminated columns. Failure of the spliced joints is the primary issue.
