IN - LINE 5 CYLINDER ???

A buddy of mine bought a new truck today. It's a Chevy Colorado. He say's it has an Inline 5 cylinder engine. I've never heard of a 5 cylinder. Is there such a thing?? I don't dought it a bit, but I just want somebody else's opinion on this. Whatcha think ??

The VW 2.5 liter engine is a 5 cylinder.

A few years ago I was at an airshow and a guy had a 3 cylinder VW engine running. He explained it to me and then started eating his lunch as people kept asking him questions. I started explaining it to everyone and he said that I did such a good job that he should hire me.
It ran really smooth and had a lot of power in the rpm range for aircraft use.

Acura Vigor had an inline 5 as well.

Seems like a solution to a problem that doesn't exist, as an inline 6 has much better inherent balance (only outdone by a 90 degree V-12). Having said that, formula one has gone from 3.5l v-10 engines to 2.4l v-8 engines and are having a heck of a time keeping them together due to excessive vibration. At 20,000 rpm, I guess every little bit counts.

I don't know about the Colorado's but I know in the GM SUV's with the I-5 the front axle runs through the oil pan so most repairs to the front axle require removing the engine.

My Kubota M4700 has a 5-cylinder diesel in it. Smooth and running little sucker, quite too.

The Volvo V/S 70's have the inline 5 and are an excellent engine in those cars, lots of power and very good fuel economy.

Not sure about the GM 5 thoguh.... still should have kept the 4.3, that was a nice engine that just plain worked... but lets see what they can do with the 5, maybe they will improve it...

Not only did Audi have a 5-cylinder diesel, it also had a 5-cylinder gas engine in the 5000 series in the early 1980's. When I worked at the Audi garage, we even did some service on some forklifts for a local company that were propane versions of the same engine. So it's been done before.

As KCM mentioned, the 3 Liter Mercedes diesel (5 cyl.) was used in the 300D & 300TD sedans. We have an old '76 300D and I've been tinkering with the idea of installing the engine in an Allis Chalmers B or C.

Don't forget all the Dodge and Freightliner "Sprinter" vans running around now! Powerplant is an inline 5 turbo diesel.

I have a Mercedes Benz sprinter van....sold by Dodge.....it has a inline 5 cly. turbo diesel and it will flat fly....3/4 ton...5 speed auto...its a real mover .....very quick to about 85 mph (govener).....22 - 23 mpg..

Yesterday was riding with another phone guy, my company truck broke. But, went by some place in Morris, IL. and he asked if I'd seen those big Dodge vans and pointed out that they were 5 cylinder Mercedes diesels. I didn't catch it, but thought a minute and figured that he was talking about the sprinters. I replied that I thought were the Cummins on 3/4 or 1 ton frames - I had no clue. Hmm? They seem to do pretty well on the road thats for sure. Always wondered about stability at higher speeds because of highth and narrowness, but I've been passed by a few on the interstate.

Hmm? 5 cylinder Mercedes? I kind've like those vans, as vans go. Live and learn.

Never heard mention of an inline 5, but do know of a guy the had a V-7 . Well, yes and no. Seems this older man bought a brand new ford back in 1957 with a V-8 engine. Having driven a very old car with a low hp engine in it for so many years, the new V-8 amazed him with all its power. He drove the 57 ford for 12 years or so , until removing one of the heads by a machanic was required to do it`s first repair job. At that point, it was discovered that a rod and piston had never been installed when the car was built by Ford. The old guy only drove the car back and forth to town and never knew the difference, as it still had so much more hp then his former car. John

My nephew mowed lawns when he was in high school.He had some cash saved and wanted a pickup truck so he could do more lawns.His brother in law had a 2 year old Ford Ranger that he bought new.The truck ran lousy, lacked power.It had been back to the dealer many times,they could find nothing wrong.Brother in law was fed up with the truck so he sold to the kid for 800.00.Nephew takes to school and has the auto shop teacher listen to run.Teacher has the boys do a compression check, #4 is zero.They pull the head and find # piston very clean, also no carbon in the head.Teacher lets the class decide next move.One boy says lets look at the valves on #4 another says turn the engine by hand.# 4 piston doesnt move.Off comes the pan.No cap on #4 rod, no cap or nuts in pan.Tim paid for a new rod and gaskets.Trunk ran fine on 4 cylinders.He used it for a while and found he needed a bigger truck for his mowers and tools.Sold to the shop teacher for three grand and bought a used F 150.Tim is a general contractor now.He gave his dad a new Ford ranger for Christmas.

Yep. Gardner built 5 cylinder diesels for all manner of folk over here for about 50 years. Scammel, Foden, ERF, Thornycroft and Albion were major users. For a big old diesel they run wonderfully smooth and quiet. Engines with odd numbers of cylinders supposedly require less dynamic balancing than ones with even numbers. Why? That would be anybodies guess...

Here's the scoop on the 5-cylinder, from a friend who is an engineer with GM Powertrain: Much of the engineering for these pickups was done by Isuzu, which also developed a version for the Japanese market. Of course, Isuzu wasn't interested in putting anything larger than a 4 cylinder under the hood. As a result, several crucial engineering decisions had been made before someone realized that there wasn't enough room for a straight-six or V-6. So GM went on a crash program to develop a five cylinder version of the inline DOHC truck engine family, which already included four and six cylinder versions.

I have driven a couple of these pickups. The engine is a good match for the vehicle. I believe they had to add a balance shaft to get the vibration down to acceptable levels.

I was thinking of buying one of these but have been just a bit hesitant...not to be desparaging, but if the truck is mostly engineered by Isuzu, I know I will not be buying one now. Let's just say Isuzu is not known for the same great design and reliability as the other japanese makes.

I have a 1986 Isuzu pickup bought new. The sheet metal is junk, the heating system has issues, but in all the years I have owned it the engine has NEVER been a problem. Burns anything and does not complain. Great engine.

The 5 cylinder is a derivative of the L6. The Vortec V6 is a derivative of the V8. All are designed for flexible manufacturing, The V6 tooling can do a v8 and so forth. And the trans and platforms are designed around powertrains.

yep, I am a GM man all the way, but they decided to fix something that wasn't broke. I have an 02 S10 with a 4.3 V6 and I love it my second one. My 3rd S10 the first had the gutless wander 2.8. They started calling the S10 the Colorado and put a 4 or a 5 cylinder in them. I don't see many of them out there.

Henry Ford was road-testing one in the early 40's. He didn't want a six. But government specs demanded it for WWII. Thus the Ford Six for 1941. It was probably a better engine than the V8 until about 1954. The company I worked for had a stand-by power house with a 5 cylinder Fairbanks Morse that was installed in 1940. One of the Volvo's and one of the SAABs also use 5 cylinder, as I recall.

yep, they've used them for years in Europe, suposed to have the economy of a four, with the smoothness and power of a six, they even make them in diesel form. having said that i've never driven one!
