Belts are measured at the top. That's why you use the outside diameter of the pulleys when figuring belt length by math. Try this: set the pulleys at a little less than 1/2 the max adjustment and run a wide 1" tape measure around them on the outside edges. Don't use the groove bottom. Be sure to measure the width at the top, too.

Use the belt size calculator at this site:

I'd use a piece of rope that fills the v' of the pulley, and guestimate from that measurement, allowing for the slack adjustment int he system.. etc..

I have done quite a few hot rod cars with custom made accessory brackets. I have found adjusters set about 10% of there travel, peice of string raped tightly around the bottom of the V-pulleys let the end overlap and mark with marker, right at the point where it over laps. lay out, measure this is the length of belt. Belt always ends up a tad shorter than fits pulleys, if you leave a bit of adjustment smaller, the belt should fit. Belt ends up short because of the V in the pulley, belt will ride higher on pulley than the string. Works every time if done right.

2 X center-to-center distance + half the circumference of the larger pulley + half the circumference of the smaller pulley. Have the pulleys at their closest adjustment before you do this. Buy belt. Return home. Attempt to install. Go back to shop, buy next size up or down, lol. Most likely you will have a belt a bit too big, in which case you simply adjust them outward to take up the slack.

I use your style too, but when I get close, buy 2 belts and take one back.lol Sure glad the nearest Fleetfarm isn't 50 mi. Looks like the calculater will save me a couple runs, so I put it in favorites. Thanks

I use a piece of rope. Cut it to lenth and take it to the parts store. Then buy a belt 1/2 inch shorter and one the same size. Try them both and take the one that doesn't work back.
