I am looking for a lighter weight tiller for my Dad to use in his garden. I have looked at the Troy-Bilt Tuffy model, but the current one has counter rotating tines - which he does not like. The next models-up that are of interst are the Pony ($999) and Pro-Line ($1199). Both are 16" wide and 5ish hp.

But in looking on the web for tillers, I have found that Simplicity makes a decent looking rear tine tiller. One is a 6 hp model 6016RT ($699) and a 7 hp 7016RT ($829). The 6 hp model has what they call "Slasher" tines, where as the 7 hp model has bolo tines. What are slasher tines? Another nice sounding feature is the ability to easily unlock the drive wheels. I have a Troybilt Horse model and put it in neutral to push in and out of my walkout basement - something that"s really nice. It sounds like this is something you can do with the Simplicity at the wheels vs tranny. I do not think the Troybilts (aside from the Horse model) have this feature - anyone know?

Size, hp and cost wise, the Simplicity looks like a good buy.

Question is - anyone used a Simplicity rear tine tiller? What"s the good bad and ugly about these machines.

My Dad is 74 yrs old and has a HUGE tiller that is made by BCS, but it"s getting a little to hard for him to man handle it at his age - hence my search for him something smaller.

Thanks in advance,
Bill

My neighbor has one of those Mantis tillers and it does a fine job in the sand soil we have. One caution is that you till the whole garden first with a big machine. The Mantis will bounce all over the place on hard soil till it gets dug in. I have a troy Horse with a 8hp industrial engine. Very little will slow it down. If you want a true power trip in tillers try this. Find a Gravely and hook up a Roto-Plow on it. DDDaaaaa ammmmn does that thing ever dig!!!! First pass will put you down to 8 inches deep. Go around again and you can be about 12 inches deep. It will pitch out old bricks and part of an old wood fence post with not even a burp. They are great for breaking up loam and clay pack so things will drain in your garden. Here in South Jersey there are strips of loam from yard to yard and the Grvely will do the trick. Have fun in your garden! Jeffcat

Since my disability in '99....I mounted my tiller on my 1620 Power King tractor....I had already welded a 2" reciever on the tractor front.....so I removed the tiller handles and wheels...I set the tiller to the right side to line up with the tractor....built all this with 2x2" steel tubing..... hydrolic lift, power steering and hydro.....tractor plays with that man killer..... .

My wife's grandfather (about 70 and in poor health) loves his Mantis tiller. It is small, weighs 20 lbs, and does a heck of a job.

I agree a mantis would be perfect and they weigh less than 20 lbs .
