How to keep insects out of stored firewood

I asked this question on a firewood forum and got no answers. Even though it is OT here, there are ALWAYS answers on Tool Talk.

A friend has a lot of tops from logging on her land and has a large shed to store wood. If we cut, split and stack a few years supply for her, how can we keep wood eating insects from attacking the wood?

We went with the borax. In a couple or few years I'll let everyone know how it worked out.

This forum is GREAT for answers, good answers, to just about any practical question (and some impractical questions).

As Richard G. said,

Borax, it is a multi-purpose house hold cleaner and detergent and I use it for welding flux when I am forge welding. I buy 20 Mule Team Borax at any grocery store. It is real cheap and I just spread it on my wood pile, as my wood shead adjoins my garage and one year I had a bunch of ants in the rotted wood, Borax works real good, just top dress the wood.

I keep a large stack of wood, usally have a 1 to 2 year supply on hand. I keep it outdoors but keep enough "in the dry" for about a month during the winter. I get some of the firewood from the county recycling place and haven't identified all the kinds of wood. There is ONE kind the bugs really go for and I don't know what it is. The wood is reddish towards the center and heavy, the bark is rather smooth. Those pieces are the ones that get borers. Sometimes I see the yellow and black striped "wasps" which I think are the culprits. I've wondered about spraying the wood with kerosene and old oil mixed but don't want to pollute the soil. (I stack the wood on broken pieces of cement and rocks)

Boric acid, a very common product, will protect the wood for years. It is very safe and easy to use.
It is sold under several names such as Timbor, Boracare and Termite Proof.
Check with your local farm supply.

KEH, Our friend could have firewood for years if we cut, split and stack it while we are nearby. She cannot do that for herself and we may not be back for quite a while.

Paul, Some firewood that had been stacked under cover at her place for a year had a moderate amount of insect-produced "sawdust", so we are concerned about longer-term storage.

Redneck, We can store the wood out of the weather and limit rot but she is a bit concerned about heavy use of insecticides.

I store firewood outside too.....I have had pieces that are 3+ years old now. I spray the stacked wood with permithrin (good insecticide) and the carpenter ants stay off of it and in the fall I bring in about 2 face cords to the garage. I also spray the inside of the garage heavily with insecticide. I dont know if the insecticide will be harmful while burning the wood. (I am not sick from it yet). I have seen guys around here have HUGE piles of firewood enough to fill an entire garage-no joke (20 cords or more). I have to believe that as long as it is used and not allowed to rot it should be okay.

We have ahd wood sit outside for a year then brought into the garage for another two and nothing's gone wrong with it. Is there a wood insect in your area your concerned about? Paul

There are insect eggs already under the bark. They will hatch out and start working on the wood. As long as the wood is burned up in a year or two there should be no great loss.
