Do The Magnetic Welder Grounds Work Ok? Do They Ground On Rusty Metal? Are They Better Than The Clamp?

thanks guys! what i was looking at was the cheap ones at harbor freight, but i think i will stick to the good old clamps, most of my arc welding is on rusty metal, but i clean off where i ground and start to weld.

Hi Geno,

Usually when you add magnetizm to welding you get arc blow. That's why everyone says to always uncoil the welding leads so you don't introduce eddy currents.

I could be all wet on this one as I've never tried them. I did try the magnetic 90� clamps they did cause arc blow.

Hi Geno,

An easy way to check the quality of a ground connection is to feel it for heat after doing some welding. The more incomplete the connection the hotter the ground will get. A perfect ground connection will not become warm from welding.

My experience with a magnetic ground block (a cheap one from Harbor Freight, but how complicated a piece of equipment are we talking about here?) was that it got hot on a perfectly clean, flat test surface. A ground clamp at the same location afterward did not become hot.

I looked at Harbor Frights Magnetic grounds. The magnet was so poor quality that they would not stick to the display rack! A good one from a welding supply does a good job on clean bare metal but a clamp is more sure. If you must use a mag ground just clamp on to the stud.

They work good, not as good as a clamp.You still have to have a good contact. If you have a lot of rust it will have to be cleaned. The only problem I've had is welding on logging tr. when its mt. up on the truck, the cables on my Big 40 are heavy for most mag.{ and yes I have a big mag. but its over kill,will lift 150lbs.} But for the avg. joe they work just fine.
