Can someone look under the hood of their '76 Dodge 100 pickup with the slant six engine and find the correct timing on the sticker?
All other years '71-'78 list TDC +/- 2*; my book says for '76 use emission sticker under the hood. My sticker is unreadable. This was a Federal vehicle, not California.
Thanks,
slowpoke

The timming indicator on my 86 slant six is rusted so I can't see it. Similar ones have allow me to know about where it should be set. However I usually advance until it starts to ping when it shouldn't, then back off just a bit. I find that spark plug gap shoud be right or it can sometimes lead to pinging. Too big of a spark maybe and faster ignition?? Anyway with the rest of a tune up on it, going by vacume, the advance to ping and back off, and maybe a check with the light to see where you end up, and you should be close.

if you want the best timing set it with a vacuum gauge and you wont need a sticker to tell you where to set it.

I think you will find that the timing has very little effect on the CO reading. Look for a clogged air filter or theromostat letting engine run cold etc.

As long as it's not pinging (spark knock), you should be able to set it between 4 and 8 degrees BTDC (at idle, with the vacuum advance disconnected).

Unless it is subject to emissions testing, there's no reason not to tweak the timing ahead a little, as long as you don't get a knock when it's lugging, you SHOULD get a little more power, and slightly better mileage.

Bob, it all started when my friend's truck failed the smog check. It had very high CO and the test tech said the cause is unburned fuel. When I looked at the printout the timing was recorded as TDC. I thought that could cause the problem, so I went to Chilton's Truck Manual and for '76, it stated to use the emissions info on the sticker under the hood because of changes during the production run. All other years from ' 71-' 78 show TDC +/- 2*. I don't have any six cylinders, but I thought it would be around 6-8* before TDC. The sticker is completely faded out after 30 years. But then, I suppose it would depend on the VIN to get the right timing for a '76.
