Sorry it took me awhile to get back to you.

Scratch start Tig is very common and has been around for many years, 60yrs or so. You lightly touch the tungsten to the metal, like striking a match, then pull back off the metal establishing the arc.

Nothing fancy needed, Tig torch, flow meter, AR for cover/purge gas, and a DC machine using straight polarity, DCEN. You set the machine amps then fine adjust welding amps with travel speed.

Just connect the electrode holder to the Tig cable and the ground clamp to the work and your set up.

You can buy a cheap Tig torch at HF or Northern for about $30 and a flowmeter for about $50.

I have a 100 amp Tig Machine that has developed some problems. I only use this machine on .095 or thinner 4130 tubing, and not very often at that.

If I can adapt the Tig torch to my Hobart wire welder, would it work, or am I just reaching for straws?

No, "most", not all, Mig machines use a constant voltage(CV) power supply where as Tig machines use constant current(CC) power supplys.

I say most as some of the newer power supplys are both CC and CV on the upper class machines and scrath start Tig could be used on this type machine.
