Airconditioner experts, I've got a question

I have 2 rooms with a door way but no door between them. I figured I need 24,000 BTU to cool the whole area. Would it be best to get 1 24,000 or 2 12,000 BTU units, 1 in each room. Does it cost the same to run 2 12,000 units as 1 24,000 unit? Any other considerations?

FWIW:Assume you've already cosidered and rejected as too expensive putting in a lower false ceiling...but with 10 foot ceilings think about a heat-robber for winter: just a little tube with a small electric motor at the bottom. It pulls hot air from the ceiling, blows it along the floor, helps keep heat distributed...should work for summer cooling, too (in reverse, but never tried it) as cooler air would tend to fall to floor..or a little air cleaner that exhausts upward should do the same...

Oversizing an air conditioner is actually worse than undersizing it. If the air conditioner is too big, it will never run long enough to take the moisture out of the air and the house will be uncomfortable even though the temperature is down. Comfort is a function of both the actual temperature and the humidity. As you cool air, if you don"t take the moisture out the relative humidity will go up and the place will be clammy. If the unit is too small, the house may never get down to the temperature you want, although it"ll be a lot more comfortable because the air will be dry.

Do a search for air conditioner sizing. There are several places on the web where you can do a first order heat load estimate for free.

In one of my assorted engineering jobs, I had the task of sizing air conditioning for communications facilities. Been a while, but the physics haven"t changed.

I've got a rental house that has about 800 square feet and I cool the whole house with one 18,000 btu window unit.

Those are some pretty big rooms! to require a ton of cooling each.

Well, perhaps I over estimate what it will take to cool it. If I get too small BTU it won't work. If I get too many BTU I can cut it down. Any way its an old house with crawl space, no insulation in floor or walls, does have insulation in ceiling. Total area is 988 sq. ft. with 10' ceilings and the kitchen in one of the rooms. What ever it takes to cool it should I get 1 big unit or 2 smaller ones?

Hi LD,

Two units will be more cost effective as you can shut one unit down under light cooling loads. You would need to figure two unit cost vs single unit cost vs running cost. Actual savings will probably be slim under most conditions. A added benefit is if one unit breaks down then you have one operating.

Also you might want to consider the newer motel type AC units. They run wisper quite when comparred to a window AC units and leave the window opening clear as there installed in the wall.

For 1000sft uninsulated in a high humidity climate or the Arizona desert then 2tons is about right.
