Electric trailer brake install question

Howdy, all.
I've got a 16' flatbed trailer that we bought to use around the farm. It probably weighs about 2,000lbs and we use it a couple of times a year to haul up to 3,000lbs. It came without brakes but I clearly need to put some on it. It's a tandem axle with axles rated at 3500 lbs each. My question is do I need to install brakes on both axles or just one?

Thanks,
Darren

Hi Darren,

In AZ the first brake axle comes at 3000lbs and the second is required at 6000lbs then brake "axles"(2) rated for the GVWR there after. In Some States it starts at 1500lb. This is for non-commerical trailers.

For commerical trailers then I think I read where it's a brake axle equal to the trailer GVWR but not more than 20,000lbs per axle. I'd check on that.

The last time I checked you could buy a 3500# Dexter electric brake axle complete with springs and hangers for $185 new. The 5000# axle was $220.

The law in Mi says all axles must have brakes on a multiple brake trailer. Buying new axles i probably as cheap as buying brake assemblies. You also need separate insurance on a tandem trailer.

I have done what you propose. I replaced the entire axle(s) on my twin axle trailer. After it was done, I am sure that was the better route to take. Mixing old parts with new ones rarely goes swiftly.

It's not how much you can pull; it's how much you can stop!

Some states require brakes on trailers. Check here.

If you figure in the cost of your labor, you might be farther ahead to buy a couple of Torq Flex axles with the brakes on 'em.

Make sure you are wanting to keep the trailer long term as brakes will cost to put on. If you're not sure then you might consider selling it and buying one with brakes. It could be cheaper in the long run. I have a 20 ft trailer with 3 axles and am glad to have 2 axles with brakes.

1 is better than none and 2 is better than 1 ? It all depends on how good you like to stop. Personally, I've never owned a trailer with enough brakes.
