hello
Just wondering if you can glue Stainless steel,,Building a set of Running boards and if I weld a bracket under the board it leaves a stain and some distortion on the top ,,if I could glue a Piece on the bottom it would eliminate the need to weld it.there would be no pulling of the glue joint just some pressure if anyone ever stepped on it? Thanks Dave

Hi Dave,

The reason your getting a color and plate distrotion is using too much heat from the weld process.

Tig is about your only choice to resolve this issue, about $100 for scratch start Tig componets on the cheap end and about $200 for quality componets, torch, tungsten and flowmeter, any DC machine of 100amps.

Tig would allow you to lower the heat input and make a very nice danty weld that would niether show color or heat distortion.

In commerical kitchens we are required by code to SS skin the columns and we use silver silicon on the tile face then install the SS skin then use duct tape to hold it tight for a few days to dry. You'll ruin the SS skin trying to remove it after the silicon sets up. Use alcohol to remove any oils from the SS before applying any type of sealant.

I gotta agree with Kip, welding would be the correct choice for your project.

T-Bone, always been impressed with your knowledge and advise given here. Did I read right what you said up above? For $200 you can get TIG welding equipment that'll run on any DC machine? Does this mean I could use my old AC/DC stick welder to do TIG welds? If so- where would I find this kinda stuff? Any links? Thanks!

We use Hysol 9309NA structural adhesive to bond stainless, nickel, aluminum and titanium to metal, Kevlar and fiberglass. Not cheap, but wont come loose. Welding would probably still be the best for your project.

A good body shop supply house should have a product called FUSER(sp) They make several different versions for plastics or metal. It is used for panel replacement on the newer glued together vehicles. If properly applied the metal will tear before the FUSER gives up.It isn't cheap but it works well and is as strong or stronger than a weld.

Ive seen guys weld a countertop section in a restaurant with a big ugly bead and when they got done polishing out the work you could not even tell it was welded together.Stainless is good that way.You can even use abrasives to put back a brushed finish.
