Hi all,

With the compressor tank discussion going on right now, I thought I would ask you guys what you recommend I install as an automatic drain on my compressor. I have an old Saylor-Beall compressor with an approx. 60 gallon horizontal tank and a 2 hp motor. I would like to install an autodrain on it to keep it in good shape. What kinds of autodrains have you guys installed and are happy with (or hate - that would be good to know also)?

I removed the drain petcocks on my two 80 gal tanks and installed airline directly to it. I just use these air line to go outside shop. Moisture is released when ever use this hose. Has worked the best for me and makes for another hose outlet.

The timer drains do work great but if you are short on outlets (as I am) there are many float types that work very well. With these there is no air loss so your compressor won't kick on when your timer releases consendation.

Float types won't work in an unheated building in a cold climate. They freeze.

I used a solenoid on mine. I hooked an adaptor up on the bottom drain of the tank and ran tubing to the solenoid, then wired a receptical to turn on and off with a switch. I plugged both the compressor and the solenoid into the switched receptical, so whenever the switch is off, the solenoid opens up and drains the tank of air (and condensation). A solenoid muffler keeps the sound from being too loud.

Mine is electrical. I can set the time interval between releases and the duration of the release. I forget the brand name right now, but it's the same brand as we use here at work on the big receiver tanks. We have 21 receivers that are each about 8 feet across by 15 feet high. Various pressures from 100 to 1000 PSIG.
