I have a auto equipment dealer that has several large used units. He is favors Champion because he is a dealer. He has a couple of quincy units that he thinks is 20yr old and came out of an auto dealership. I think the tag says they are #375 and they have 5hp 3ph motors. I can't use the 3ph. Can't find any info on these. No magnetic starter. Would have to buy new motor. He wants $400 for them. Are they to old? Is that a good price? Horizontal tank, how to check for rust inside?

They are probably 325's. Best you can get, if they were even half maintained. 20 years isn't much on a tank. I'd wager they are in good shape, but check them out (trust, but verify, lol). You should be able to make a good unit out of them. New 325 pumps are over $2000 apiece, which should give you some idea of their quality.

I'd try to get them cheaper than that. You can get a new 5hp sp motor off ebay for about 250 or watch for a used one. I would susspect the tanks are shot if there that old. You can always rebuild pumps and most of the older pumps are better made than the new ones, doesnt matter who the manufactuer is. They were slower runners too and usually outlast their original users although cfm output will be somewhat less than new. From what I have found, Quincy, Saylor Beall, IR, Curtis, Champion seems to be the line up in quality. You can pull the endcaps and inspect the tank to a limited degree (unless you have or can rent a borescope). I would check the outside of the tanks very carefully, (especially where the feet are welded on) for cracks and pin holes as welding on a tank is not an option. Better yet, have the guy fire them up and see how long they hold pressure, listen for leaks, do the soapy water test, etc. If you get a good pump, you can always replace the tank and usually come out dollars ahead, with a better unit, compared to the new cost of a comperable cfm rated unit. Mag starters are 75$ on ebay. I would probably be inclined to try to get them all for a grand, assuming they are all 2 stage units and in, at least acceptable condition. Sell the rest off and you can probably get yours for nothing or close to it, if several means 3 or so. I just re did a 20 cfm IR unit that I have 900$ in. New tank and all the rest, unloaded, mag start, press switch, belts, everything except for the motor. A new unit runs about 1600$ and a friend of mine has one and has had problems with it.

Thats about all I know,

As you have discovered, you would need single phase air compressor rated motors of the same hp, and magnetic starters. If the compressors have auto drains on them, the tanks should be in good shape. If they have manual drains, they probably filled up with water before anyone bothered to empty them. No real good way to look for rust.

Follow the link to a 5 hp two stage Quincy vertical, new from TPtools.

Its used, probably well used, given the three phase motors, I think I'd keep looking. The cost of converting is probably more than a similar used single phase can be had for.
