O/T Ford truck rear spring bolsters

State inspection is right around the corner and I have to replace the rear leaf spring bolsters on my 89 ford 1/2 ton pick up. The rear most one are shot, the front ones are not real good, so I may as well replace all of them and the shackles. Are these available any where but from Ford? I got a price for the 4 bolsters,2 shackles and 6 bolts, it is about $300 with tax.
Are these available from anyone else cheaper?
I'm planning to pull the box off to change these, remove the rear gas tank, patch up the trailer hitch and maybe paint the frame.

What exactly is a bolster? And just how much of an inspection does the state do on a pickup?

The bolsters attach the springs to the frame. I'm told Ford uses a lot of cheap imported steel for things like this and it rusts out fast.
In Pa. they are tough on things like this. Of course it would be foolish not to be for obvious reasons.

Well Steve, your up rather late! In Ca. there is no mechanical inspection, just smog. But if you're stopped by an officer, he can give you a "fixit" ticket for bad tires, cracked windshield, inoperative lights and a few other things. Show that it's fixed, and you pay a $10 "administrative" fee. Of course there is more thorough spot inspections of big rigs.
The state wants to see a 15% failure rate on smog checks of older vehicles, so private "test only" stations are springing up all over. I heard that one company wants to put 5000 in the state. They can't do any repairs so the charge is 3 times the (private) test & repair stations. Ca is hoping older vehicles will fail the test and owners won't want to go some where else for repairs and return for a retest. Too much trouble, so junk the vehicle. Ca also offers to pay $600 if you will junk an older vehicle. But it has to be licensed, smogged and in operating condition for the last several months!

Sometimes, NAPA has or can order those parts and usually about 10-15% cheaper than Ford.

Steve: Another place to check would be if you have a local spring place that does springs for big trucks. We have a spring place locally that I've used on several occasions for my trucks, and prices have always been considerably lower than dealer prices. They make their own U-bolts and many of their own springs, so you can also customize what you get if necessary.

Thanks for the link. I checked out their website. Suprisingly LMC's prices on these parts are 1 to 6 dollars per piece more expensive than buying original equipment parts at the Ford dealer. And then shipping on that also. Thanks anyway.

I didn't know if the prices were better, I get parts from LMC, NPD, SUMMIT, JEGS, you have to shop around, alot of times FORD OEM parts are priced lower or the same, just depends what the part is.
