This subject has been beat around some before but I have been thinking about the best way to heat with wood for almost a year. I want central heat and like the mess outside. I don't like the cost of the outside boiler and some of the attributes of the whole system in general but it is beginning to look like the best alternative for me and I have a shot at a never installed Hardy for about 80% of new price. Those of you that have one now do you honestly still think they are the way to go? What about favorite make? Are there other things about the system that are minuses that the sellers dont tell us? Only thing I have been able to find out localy is that wood consumption is a lot more than the sales people would have you believe. Lots of questions but lots of money to spend too, thanks in advance.

and because they vent into the atmosphere, they are not boilers. Although some people call them boilers, they are actually hot water heaters/furnaces.

Now where did you get that from Butch ? I'm a Licensed (Chief) Boiler Operator in Three States, and it don't make any difference if what makes hot water is vented out side, or with No Pressure on the Vessel, it's still a "Boiler" (for heating purpose)

I have the 200 CSS Heatmor. It will easily heat my 2600 sqft house, 625 sqft attached garage, and domestic water for 20 hours on one fill when it is around 30 degrees. Get near 40 and it will last about 26 hours. Get to 15 and windy and you only get about 15 hours. Did I mention my thermostat is set at 74 in the house and 72 in the garage? When it was in the low 30's and below 20 at night I cut a pickup load of green Cherry with a bit of dry wood too and it lasted 10 days. It wasn't stacked much over the bed sides either. I would suggest the Heatmor based on the fact that you can more easily pull the ashes out compared to the Woodmaster but not sure about the other brands.

I have a empyre, I love it, would never have a fire in the house again. You will wonder why you didn't get one years ago. Get a stainless steel one. Check out all brands that you can find set up and working. Watch it burn right after it is loaded. Compare smoke output. They all smoke but have different baffel designs that make a difference.I have fan forced draft that helps burn wet wood. I have not heard anything good about taylors though.

What does a wood fired boiler cost? Never seen one in an ad.

Here's my experience, just to add to the confusion. I have a Heatmor and generally have been happy with it. Don't know anything about Hardy. I am finishing my third heat season this spring. I heat an 1800 ft. old house, 2000 ft shop, which is insulated better than the house, and domestic water for the house. I will have used almost 40 cu. yards of ash, elm, cherry, soft maple this season. It's easier for me to figure it this way since I never stack it like cord wood. I don't split anything, just cut it small enough to handle. It's all dead, dry wood. Yo have to like to cut wood. I have had a bunch of trouble with my circulating pumps. Turns out they were too many horse and would cavitate, causing burn out. I bought my boiler one place and all the pumps, pipe, etc. at another. Long story. Try to know your dealer, get references, so you can get help/ parts, if needed. All in all, I like my boiler to make a long story short. Good luck, Gus

I have a friend that has an uncle who has a exterior wood boiler, he loves it, he lives in northern michigan--real cold up there. I personally may get a corn/pellet stove so I dont have to pay for that Propane.

I've been looking myself and one of the beast I've seen is a Taylor. I've got a customer who has one of their largest units he uses to heat his home with and he plans to heat a large shop also once it's completed. He also has the option to supply the hot water to the house. He's had it going 24/7 for nearly 4 years with no problems to speak of. During the summer months he feeds it maybe once a day, depending on wood quality, just for the water. During the winter he says he can get away with once, maybe twice a day with no problem with the same 'quality wood' restrictions. the quality of the wood you burn has more to do with the heat output and actual burn time than anything else. Based on this guys experience I believe the thing to do is to oversize a little bit above what you actually need. This way you can put in more wood to start with and if the fire does die down there is still a little "reserve' heat available that wouldn't be there with a smaller unit. Just my .02 hope it helps.

Look at the gauge of the metal on Hardy before you buy it.

Biltex are you saying the gauge on the Hardy isn't thick enough?

We have a Hardy furnace, we use it to heat our aprox 2500 sq ft ranch just north east of Kansas City, MO.

I would estimate going thru a cord of wood a month, maybe up to 1.5 cords a month.

We have had good luck with ours once I got the relay wiring on it straightened out and replaced the domestic hot water coil and pump impeller damaged when somebody let it freeze up before we bought the place in 2002.

I use it when I have wood for it, I burn the dead trees I take down on our property and occasionally for a friend or family member.

I won't buy wood at 150 - 200 a cord, it's cheaper for me to buy propane.

TimS Idon't know if aHardy is built heavy enough. You have one and it is doing the job, thats great. When I was looking at heaters I noticed that Hardy heaters weigh 650 lbs. and are 16 gauge and others 1350 lbs. and 10 gauge.

Ahh, I see what you mean. I don't know, time will tell I guess.

From what I read the Hardy is made out of stainless steel so maybe the corrosion resistance of that balanaces being made of thinner gauge steel.
