Some of you might remember right after Christmas I was trying to determine what to do with an old Sears 14.4 volt cordless drill with dead cells in the battery packs. I bought a new 18 volt drill but still couldn't let the old one go. I opened the packs and tested each cell. Some as I stated read 0 volts. I ran 6 volts throught the bad ones for a second or 2 then put the packs in the 10 hr charger that that drill came with. They charge up fine.

However. I find after sitting a few days the bad cells go down again and I've had to repeat the above process several times. So I've given up. While you can get them charging again if they sit around a lot they'll go bad again.

I counted up good cells between the two packs and don't even have enough to make one good pack. I haven't decided yet but I'm thinking I might get a replacement pack for a harbor freight and maybe the cells for it will pull out and fit inside the Sears pack with minimal effort. I know the packs are not interchangable. The harbor freight packs are MUCH cheaper than the sears packs.

Shop around on battery paks,,retail markup is often 100% or more over cost.I have found Skil,Bosch etc from licensed wholesale dealers on line for 50-60% below"off the shelf" retail at hardware/tool stores.

I was basically letting folks know that while you can get them charging again when they read 0 volts, that at least in my case, it wasn't worth the trouble. In case someone else wanted to try.

I checked throughly back in Dec. and I can and did buy a whole new nicer drill for only a tad more than replacing the bad battery packs. Also all things considered (shipping etc) I found rebuilding the packs actually was more expensive than buying new ones. The only reason I'd consider the HF packs is I've seen them sell for $9 - $10 for the whole 14.4 volt pack. I have a HF freight store on my way to work.

Here is a site that rebuilds battery packs. They do have prices listed. I have not tried them yet, so I can't offer any testimony as to their service. They are located in Pennsylvania.

Once you combine the good cells, if you are just short one or two, and they are the common sub-c.. check out radio shack.. they used to sell sub-c on the shelf.. etc.
