Now that I have the new air system up and pumping, I am looking at air tools. I have a couple old timers that I have had for 30 years or so that came off auto assembly lines years ago. Excellent units, low cfm requirements, powerful and by my standards, pretty darn indestructible. Name tags and numbers are long gone and I cant remember who made them. They are probably mid 60s to 70s vintage, came from my uncle, he said they were pretty special units and quite expensive back then. Anyone know who the makers of the good old heavy duty stuff was back then?

I see all the cheap stuff on ebay but wonder how these units hold up over the long haul. Ive got a coouple of older Dotco units that are pretty tuff too. I dont mind paying a little more for stuff I can just use and not have to think about.

Any suggestions on who I might be looking at for better than average 1/2" impact and air tools? Thank You,

scott#2

In the "ya get what ya pay for" catagory, I got a free toolkit with my compressor. It is a Craftsman advertised 6HP but is only 110V and 15Amp. That makes it a 2 HP, tops...

Back to the tools... They are useless. I can outrun the air ratchet and outpower the 1/2 in air ratchet. Don't waste your time with 'em. Aaron

All, except one of my air impacts are Mac labeled Ingersol Rand, have not been dissappointed, excpet at times I need a 3/4" drive and expect the 1/2" to the that work and just not big enough. the other is an older CP, I am not sure of the newer CP tools, they are not as good as they used to be from what other people have told me. But if you can find some older CP tools, they are the best in my opinion. as long as they have been taken care of.

No question about it, Ingersoll Rand. Been hauling logs in the northwest for 25 yrs. and had to work on them old wore out trucks, have used them all at one time or another. I personaly own Ingersoll Rand.

I have mostly Ingersol Rand, but I do have a Campbell Hausfield 3/4 impact that is a real disappointment. It doesn't do nearly what they say it's supposed to do. My 1/2 IR will run circles around the 3/4 Campbell, so I rarely use it.

I also picked up a SnapOne air chisel at an auction for a buck that was in a box with a bunch of other crap. Sometimes you get lucky

Chicago Pneumatic and Ingersoll Rand still make very good air tools. Most compressor company branded air tools are also quite good, but tend to be pricey. I like Atlas Copco, CompAir and Kaeser air tools myself, although I must admit to owning cheap no name impacts. The biggest one I have is a 1/2" impact that is marketed under the Campbell Hausfeld brand name, with 380lbs of torque. It's not bad, but not what I would consider an industrial quality tool. CP's and IR's are rebuildable as well, so they would probably last you a lifetime.

I have seen people getting good use out of Blue Point air tools and MAC air tools as well. Lately, I have seen some CAT branded tools, but can't vouch for their quality. There is a dizzying number of tool makers right now, and quality ranges from dismal to stellar. Some knock-offs seem to use old IR and CP patterns, so you can't always just tell by looking what you are getting. There is also the buy cheap, buy often approach, which works when you can get them cheaply enough. I have seen air hammers going for as little as $10, so it is an option.

I have a CP 740 1/2" impact that I bought new in 1964 and it is still a good wrench.

Post some pics of them In the "help identify" gallery to the left of this screen and give us the links to them. I'm sure someone will know who made them.
