Shop-Vac Disappointment

So I bought another shop vac to leave out in our one barn. It is a 5.5hp 12 gallon "Contractor" Shop-Vac with a 2.5" nozzle. Think it is this one:

Worthless! This thing can barely vacuum up sawdust.

I went into the house and got my 5 year old 3hp 8 gallon "pro" Shop-Vac with a 1.5" nozzle and it runs circles around the new one. At least twice as powerful if not three times.

So what do you think? Things I should check? I have been through the manual.

Also, anyone make a real good vacuum? I want one where I am a little scared of the business end.

Are you sure you removed any packing material inside the cannister.
Read them instructions on unpacking ; )

My wife bought me a big Shop-vac brand job a few years back. I had the same issue you have. I returned it and got the biggest one Craftsman offered based on info I got from American Woodwoker tests. The thing will pull the skin off your arm.

Didn't suck in a large ball, rat, rag, toy, sumpin, that clogged the hose up? I pick them off the garbage every so often, stuffed up just that way! Work great after running a broom handle thru them!

A few year ago my Wife bought me a shop vac that sounds like the same size, She got it where sh worked cheap because one attachment was missing. Well it would not even work with that sawdust, bought the 1 1/4" hose and adapter and after that did work but not great, still prefer the old 5 gal stel can unit. You replace that oversize hose with a smaller one and you can get by, the oversize hose the airflow is not enough to get dirt in suppension and keep it there

I use an old Craftsman shop vac as the dust collector on my blasting cabnet, been on there 8 years. The expensive dust collector I biough with the cabnet lasted less than 6 months. Should have taken that money and bought 3 shop vacs.

This is the model Shop Vac I bought a couple years ago when camping in NJ to clean-up a toilet over flow problem in the camper :o

I very happy with it, powerful enough, quiet, and reasonable cost (about $130 as I recall) My old Shop Vac, which I gave to my dad for his barn, works fine but it is so loud I use ear muffs when using the darn thing.

Have you replaced the filter or blown it out. Have picked up five curb setting brands over 45 years. Cleaned impellers of compacted dirt and replaced filters in them to get many more yrs use out of each one. Still have two left.

Joe : You said you want a good vaccum. How about a GREAT vaccum. By a Fein vac its the quiest one around and it sucks great. Once you use this vac you won't go back to another one. Two stage motor 2/1/4 hose on the biggest model 9-77-25. even the smaller ones are worth it. Just a word of caution Don't lend it out because you woun't get back from the person your lending it to . see link below .Good luck

Most shop vacs have a float inside the filter, it rides on two metal rods that support the filter. If the water level gets too high, it closes off the inlet to the blower. I wonder if this is stuck up or nearly so, preventing air from passing thru the motor. The float is designed to keep water from getting sucked up in the blower.

Take the filter off, make sure the thing slides up and down freely and after putting on the filter, roll it upside down/rightside up and listen for its free movement.

Any chance you have the water drain cap off the bottom of the canister? If you don"t have a major leak, that thing should be able to lift a couple of bowling balls.. Bring it back!

Heck, I have a Rigid 5HP I use to clean out the pellet stove and even plugged up and dirty it picks up almost as well as the one at the carwash.

Return it, maybe you got a lemon. I still use my 30 year old Sears, and it works excellent. Everything is made with the cheapest vendor parts, the companies must make a profit for the stockholders, and quality goes down the drain. Unless it is a heavy duty commercial unit that you will pay for, that may not be like the "good ole days stuff" This is why I have a $2500 Exmark Lawn mower, because I got tired of the other crap. Its got to the point where if its not built well, its not worth owning. Good Luck.

That manufacturer typically makes a heck of a machine. I know I wouldn't ever want to try to be naughty with one.

Give them a call, tell them the problem and I bet they have it fixed in no time. Is the float stuck? Is there something in the hose?

That machine should be able to leave hickies on a door frame.
