Noticed on a previous post that T-Bone advised using tie wire & hay wire for a mild steel filler w/ acetylene, i thought that practice was only done by us hicks-in-the-sticks in my town! I grew up around a J.D.dealership and we used the nice soft hay wire, was nice to have a filler rod that was 6' long! But-- plastic twine and string did away with that source, then we went to coat hangers--NOW HERES A QUESTION FOR YOU!--All the "guru's of the arc" will have to put your heads together to come up with a flux to use these darned old plastic coat hangers!! I know this is a silly message!******lgd

You know Gene your post isn't really all that far out. We sell several plastic welders per year to body shops and farms for repairing everything from fan shrouds to ATV fenders (there is one called Honda red) to bumper covers. No flux required. Now we are working on that wood rod.

Hi Gene, Them plastic hangers are not even good for cloths. Wife bought some 3/8" dia. and they still won't hang a coat for long. :)

Laugh all you want on the tie wire, but it works. Makes a extreamly good weld.

I know a guy that welded the A-frame on a car with a coat hanger years ago. He said he never had another minutes problem with it.

Well, if the hanger is a thermal plastic, and the repair is in a thermal plastic, then all you have to do is clean with alcohol. Filler material usually isn't needed, if the crack is veed out with a carbide burr, as opposed to a grinder, unless it falls on a Monday, in which case, you'll have to drill a hole at each end of the crack. Pretty basic stuff. HTH (8^)

If you need another type of soft wire, most lumber-yards carry the small spools of rebar tying wire.
