I am considering adding second brake system to my 16', 8000# trailer. Since one axle (rear) has the conventional electric brake, would it be wise to add a disc brake kit on the front axle? Or should I stay with the same type as is currently on the rear axle? Would appreciate comments on the disc. type vs. the conventional brake shoe type.

Hi Sam, If you add two different type of braking systems, they will brake at different times, one will lag behind the other. I would suggest putting on the same type on both axles.

Electric disc brakes? Never seen them, but that's not to say they don't exist. All of the disc brakes I've seen are hydraulic or air, which means you'd have to add a hydraulic system. That would not be cost effective, and you'd have unequal braking, as disc brakes are much stronger. The least expensive way for you to go would be to stick with the same type as you have. If you want a total upgrade, and hydraulic disc brakes are available for that size axle, then you need an electric/hydraulic actuator for the trailer. Carlisle makes a unit ( Hydrastar) that's rated for up to 26K, and the real advantage is that you get the power of hydraulic brakes while using the electric brake controller already installed in your truck.
