I am thinking of doing some wrought iron around the porch. I want to order some cast iron panels for the railing. what would I use to weld the cast to the steel? I have arc and mig with 75/25 argon/carbon

I'll make two very solid recommendations to you Carl, outside of this forum if you e-mail me. That allows me to speak freely w/o blowing my own horn in front of the entire world. If what I recommend doesn't do what I said it would, I'll take it back. I'll even pay the shipping for it to come back.

Hi Carl, You may be very well able to use what you have already. The wrought iron and cast iron pannels could be almost any metal composition from any where in the world. Nobody really watchs the company's that make them so any type of base metal is possible. Try a piece before you invest alot of money and see what welds best and that it is a good weld since it's around your porch because someone will lean on it very heavy or use it to keep from falling. Some of this type of metal doesn't weld very well but may bolt together well. I would look to see how the factory assembled it and if it was welded, your off to a promising start and just depends on what the cast has in it.

I would try your Mig first with mild steel, then 6011, brazing, ni-cad rod. Maybe a good place to try US Alloy's #2200 electrode.
I have to try some #2200 as it's got my eye.

You would have to use a nickle rod if using a stick machine. You're mig would be much better for welding the wrought iron to the steel. You can use your mig setup just the way it is. Using a nickle rod is expensive and much harder to do than with a mig. Built a 400' wrought iron fence around my yard 2 years ago and the mig is the only way to go!
