Anybody have any luck with the 115 volt wire welders? I need something smaller and handier than my stick machine to move around for small repair jobs. Currently looking at a Lincoln with a 25-135 amp range.

i have had a little craftsman for a couple of years now, its a miller 135 with craftsman logos on it for the most part but it will weld sheet metal like nothing else in the world, you cant beat it for anything 1/4 inch or smaller, i even welded an axle on a 966 IH after it snapped good enough with it that it drove itself home from the hay field, which happened to be about 3 miles so that tells the ability and durability of the smaller mig welder.i suggest it to anyone and everyone if you ever intend or need to weld. and its a great way to learn to weld too.

Here is a good read on another board, may have to scroll down a bit. Franz echoes many of my own thoughts.

I have a Miller 135. Handy machine that works well. The 175 dual voltage machine would be an even better choice if you have the $$$ and the need .

I have a Lincoln 100. Ive had it for 6 or 7 years. It is good up to 1/4 in stock. Only complaint is the duty cycle is pretty low.

I"ve got a Hobart Handler 135. Zero problems that weren"t due to pilot error in the five years I"ve owned it. It"s very similar to the same-size Miller ones, and has a Miller gun (as I understand it, when Miller bought Hobart they trashed the Hobart gun as being a sub-par design, and put the Miller guns on the Hobart welders). It gets used a fair amount on small stuff like exhaust work, sheet metal, and as a quick tack welder for heavier jobs, though it"s limited to not much above 1/8" mild steel if you want one-pass penetration and full joint strength. If you have a stick welder (as I do) for heavier work, a good 110 Mig is a good complement to it, but be wary of the super-cheap off-brand ones. Most that I"ve seen are more aggrivation than they"re worth. I"d also seriously consider a gas setup--it will give you better quality welds with less clean-up than flux-core.

My opinion. I have a Miller 175. It is the same physical size and weight as the smaller ones and has a lot more capability. If you have current limitations at some locations, Miller makes a wire feed welder that when plugged into 110 is a 135 anp welder and when plugged to 220 automatically becomes a 175. I had a Lincoln 170, and will never have another of those. It had plastic wire feed gears and I never knew if it would work or not. It spent as much time in the shop as in my shop. I used to work for a large welding supply business, and we would not sell a Lincoln welder unless a customer insisted on one, because we had so many problems with them.I have had my Miller about 6 years and never had a problem. Hobart is as good. They are owned by Miller. Most of the parts interchange.

I've got a small 115 mig from canadian tire. Its good for up to 1/8 steel. its good for fabricating brackets, exhaust repairs and other small small jobs. handy to have in the shop. can't weld too long a bead with 'er tho as it usually pops a breaker. other than that, its a good lil welder.

I have a hobart 140. It does pretty good up to 1/4" steel. The metal has to be real clean though.
