Son's buddy bought a 1984 schoolbus with a 8.1L DD engine. It appears to be governed to 55 mph. Does anyone know whether this is controlled by the speedometer or what. There is a box on the front of the engine that the throttle cable goes to with an adjusting screw with locknut. I am wondering if this is the idle screw or top speed stop screw. Does not have a tach, so unable to tell if it limits on rpm or mph. He is converting it to a hillbilly motorhome to tow his boat and haul his jetski inside and would like to be able to do about 65 mph if it has enough power, which I think it should.

I assume that is an 8.2 detroit. The exposed screw that you are talking about is the buffer screw. Its purpose is to take the lope out of the engine for a stable idle. The high and low idle adjustments are not exposed. They are typically under a long cover held on with two bolts. Please do not adjust on this if you do not know what you are doing as you can cause the engine to run wild. A competent diesel mechanic should be able to adjust this for you fairly cheaply. It will require some special tools that you won't recover your investment on in a single use. Loy

sometimes there is a bolt below the throttle pedal that you can turn further into the floorboard.
