From the library: my computer is locking up every two minutes or so, when I go on the net. Some times the screen freezes and sometimes it goes black. I have to restart manually. If I play solitare or free cell, it works OK except for one freeze up. Problem started a few days ago and has gotten to where I can't use it at all. My windows XP book is no help at all. 40GB hard drive, 5GB used. A couple days ago. I did a "Clean Disk' operation. It removed about 1/2 a GB of temp files. I also ran Spybot Search and Destroy. No software has been added. (Except I stuck an unknown CD in the drive, but it never showed up, and I forgot about it till last night. I don't know if it caused the problem or not. I also have Norton Internet protection. I'll have to get my mail from another computer if and when I can.
Any ideas appreciated.
Thanks.

One more thing, look at the electrolytic capacitors on the motherboard to see if any have developed a "dome". There were quite a few Taiwanese made capacitors that are failing. They tend to short internally from a poor dielectric material and temperature. As they short they heat up even more and the top end with the three or four creases in it will develop a bulge or "dome". I had a Gigabyte GA-7VRXP motherboard that had three in a cluster go bad. As one heated up it also took out the two adjacent ones. The computer became unstable after working fine for two years and I thought that the power supply was going bad. Then while I was trying to resolve the problem I smelled the odor of scorching printed circuit board and took a look.

It looks like my problem was a failing power supply. I've been running for three hours now with one I borrowed from another computer.. It was the easiest part to change. I suspected it when the cooling fan would sometimes not run on startup and there was no 12v to it. But it would start when I removed the ac plug. Go figure! Also the power switch wouldn't turn the machine off.

You may have a failing hard drive.

To eliminate the hard drive and its files, I suggest you download a copy of Knoppix. Knoppix is a complete Linux operating system on a bootable CD. Have someone burn you a copy of Knoppix. If your PC will boot and keep running for several hours on Knoppix, then you've eliminated everything but your hard drive and Windows installation.

By the way, if your hard drive crashes and you haven't backed up your files, you can often recover your files with Knoppix. It's saved my bacon more than once.

Thanks for the help. Amazingly, right now (11:00 pm, 65) everything is working as it should, just a little slow on startup. I just looked at the cpu fan and see that it is full of dust between the fins. Yesterday morning (58) was a nightmare trying to get the thing running. Strange that it should work now with nothing done to it. Maybe it was too cold? I'll clean out the heat sink and do some of the other sugestions. Thanks again to all.

Download Motherboard Monitor. You can set it up to run in the system tray (down by your clock) and it will tell you exactly how hot everyting is running in your machine, if it has thermal sensor diodes in it. Many Intel processors will throttle down if running too hot, whereas AMD processors will just lock up or die if they do not recieve adequate cooling. You can download it from any of the mirror site listed to the right of the screen by clicking on them.

get a spyware program and run it. Mnay of them use so many resources they can cause the problems.

I'm back up and running, permanently I hope. I've been using Norton Internet Security and Spybot Search and Destroy. A couple of years ago, I had someone sending virus emails at random from my computer. I could not get rid of it any way untill I downloaded free Spybot. That eliminated the problem.

I go into my BIOS by continualy pressing F-2 after a shut down and restart.
In there I can see the fan speeds and the CPU temperature and the Motherboard temperature.
I agree with the rest. Could be hot from cat hair or dust or what ever.
They should put the temp gauges where a person can see them like on the machinery. But I think they would sell less computers that way.
I did a simple cleaning of my sister inlaws one day and it went twice as fast. It was not the bad for dust either. It does make a big difference.
I did a lot of renovation for this new company. Renewed computers and he told me something that he does not tell just everyone. Dust and smoke kill computers. Take it apart once every 6 months and clean it out.
He does not tell everyone that because he makes his money by selling and fixing computers. So it is in his best interest to let the customer be ignorant of that fact.
Find out what temp its running at and get back to us if you can.

I forgot to say that while in the BIOS do not go around changing things if you do not know.
Just look for the temperatures and exit without saving. The BIOS is not as forgiving as windows is.

I'd suspect the heatsink on the processor is full of dust, especially if the computer is on a carpet, in the vicinity of pets, or if somone smokes in the house. Open the case, remove the heat sink from the cpu and blow out all the accumulated dust. Cpu cooling fan may have also quit.

If System Restore doesn't help, do a scandisk on the hard drive. Also maybe a power supply going bad or a memory board gone bad.

I couldn't do a System Restore because the thing would lock up or go to a black screen a couple of minutes after booting. Turns out it was the power supply. I'm running on one borrowed from another computer for three hours with no problems.

Hard to tell from here, but make sure the fan is still running. Could be a heat problem.
