i am having a problem with the auto transmission in my 2000 chevy s10 truck. at first everything is fine . after 30 minutes or so of highway driving it will shift out of overdrive and i think the converter also unlocks. if i stop the truck and kill the motor, start off again it will work ok for a while and then do it again. can anyone tell me how to test to see what might be wrong.
thanks dale

When you say it shifts out of overdrive, what exactly are you calling "overdrive?" The typical GM auto-trans. has four speeds forward plus the lock-up converter that, when it engages, feels and acts like a 5th gear. Are you loosing the "5th", or are you loosing 4th and 5th? The converter is hooked to your brake-light switch, so it unhooks whenever the brake lights come on.

How long since you changed your fuel filter. A plugged filter will do strange things. Low pressure in a fuel line some times it will act like the trany. I had a similer problem with a 95 blazer. It acted like the trany was slipping. Changed the filter and solved the problem.

Dale,
The first thing to do is to have a shop or a select parts store pull any codes stored.Until then,it's a guessing game.~brad
