Flexible Drive Shaft for Die Grinder

Anyone ever used a flexible drive shaft for a die grinder, electric or air? Not talking about the dremel tool ones, but ones that can handle a 1/4" collet and use with a carbide deburr. Would need to be hand held on the end for tight places. I have found plenty of the 1/8" dremel ones, but not hardly any for the bigger units. Would like to know where you could get them also.

Thanks

Gpower,

The only flexible shaft die grinder that I know of that will use 1/4-inch tools is the "Foredom series H" which also has a 1/4 HP motor. They are a bit pricy though. Is this something like you have in mind or do you what something more "rugged"?

The Foredom grinders are good. We use one daily, it is over 12 years old. I did have to buy a new handpiece several years ago... bearings went out on the old one. I think you can buy the complete outfit for something over 200 dollars. Check Travers Tool, or J&L Industrial Supply, online catalogs. Dumore also makes a similar flex shaft grinder, but it is much more expensive.

Mike,

That is what I am talking about, I really do not need the motor, just the shaft. I have seen ones just like you posted, and they are upwards of 1600.00. I am not going to be using it all the time, or the price would not concern me. More like a one -two time use. Just need a shaft that will mount into my electric die grinder and I will be set.

Thanks

No, I never used one personally, but am betting that they're still made and still widely used.

Back in the late '70's and early '80's I worked in an aluminum extrusion factory, and the and die shop guys used them plenty, and they didn't use Dremels for die repairs. Sometimes they'd have to reach into/down the barrels of presses in a pinch, and as small as the hand grinders they had were, they'd be too big by the time you'd gat a hand around them with asbestes gauntlets and heat and stuff. Weren't they "Moto" brand? Actually, I think that they may've had some flexible shaft driven hand grinders too. Maybe those same shafts can be used on the collet. It's been a great many years since then, and I have no idea where they got them. Maybe if you contacted a tool and die shop, might get a lead on their tool suppliers, if they don't mind giving out trade secrets. I don't deal with them, but am betting that they are still widely used.

Good luck, Mark

Could be Larry. It"s been a good 25 or more years and I wasn"t a die guy, I just used or blew them to bits. Amazing what 1800 tons per square inch can do to some dies when a billet isn"t hot enough. POW!!! Another die flies the length of a football field, goes through a brick wall, across the driveway, and through the brick wall of the plant behind ours, what"s left of them. Them die guys had all of the good commercial stuff that we all wished that we"d had, the company paid for theirs.

At one time I had such a tool. It was made by Hastings.
Try Brownell Bros. They sell gunsmithing supplies. I'm sure they have a web site.
