Wondering what the best sealer is for the fittings on the tank itself and at the air stations. Bushings, main air line out, saftey valve, drain, press switch, reg, filter connections, etc?

In my previous posts I read where people had leaks using teflon tape. How about regular old pipe dope, is it any good for this app? I just want a tight, leak free system since Ive gone this far.

Any suggestions on what really works???

Use both, wrap teflon tape around threads then slop a little dope on. An old plummer that was installing my propain lines told me he always used both and never failed a pressure test or had to go back to fix a leak.

I have been following his advice and it works.

There are better products, but I just used plain old pipe dope. I have numerous connections -- 6 drops (only two with water traps) several pipe connectors etc. In other words, many potential leaks in about 100 feet of pipe. My compressor may come on every one to two hours when not in use. The switch is off on the days I don't use it. So the times it does come on do not hurt anything. Pipe dope is a little messy but much easier for me than that (expletive deleted) tape. I do use tape on the regulator fittings and on my paint guns etc, but on normal plumbing fittings, pipe dope.

"Rectorseal 5" ain't bad either! You DON'T want to use it in a water system - tastes pretty funky, but it's reccomended for sealing systems with propane gas, gasoline, diesel fuel, etc. It ain't cheap, but it works.
About 20 years ago, teflon tape was outlawed in the nuclear plants I worked in. I retired about 4 years ago & the stuff was still outlawed. It works great, BUT if a little piece of the tape gets into the system, it can clog up stuff. No big deal in home or normal shop use as long as you don't mind disassembling an air grinder to clean the vanes.

I've used Rectorseal #5 for years on every type of fittings. Works great.

When I used to build hydraulic test equipment and power supplys, when I was younger. I used mostly teflon tape 3-4 layers thick minimum. I also used pipe dope, (also called bird $hit) The pipe dope was messy though on your hands and it dripped on the machines after assembly. Teflon tape is neat and it wont get in the fittings.

I use a white sealant made by Permatex. What great stuff that is. You can buy it whereever Permatex products are sold. It was real stiff stuff. I would take a dab and do the inside of the threads too. I would also ensure that all the cutting oil and chips would be cleaned from the threads. I'd wash with solvent and blow them dry with an air hose.

Loctite PST. There's two kinds, one comes in a white tube and is good for about everything except stainless. The other's in a silver-grey tube and is ok for stainless as well.
