The plant engineering manager brought in some goodies inherited from a uncle of his. It was a small set housed in a small "WILLIAMS" box about the size a modern day 1/4" drive would come in. Inside were hex drive sockets ranging from 5/32 to 1/2" marked with the "HeX" brand. Also near the drive end the sockets were knurled rather haevily in a raise panel about 1/8" in width. Also in the box were 2 mis mates branded "WILLIAMS" these were the smaller 2 sockets in the kit and were also hex drive. I din't measure the size of the hex but it looked to be 1/4" altho it could have been 5/16". There was no ratchet with the set only a sliding handled breaker type bar in "HUSKY" brand as well as a extension of about 4 inches with a sleeve over the extension that was knurled. i'd suppose as a handle. We are unfamiliar with hex drive in general was it a big deal that did not work out ? who was HeX ? were they a company on there own? or a division of another? what time period were these tools from? Thanks for your assistance..... ..... beezer

J.H. WILLIAMS Is a division of Snap on. I own combination wrenches up to two inches, inch drive ratchet, and many smaller williams tools. They are better tools than snap ons own name. I don't think I have ever broken one of their tools, but they are not cheap. They don't cut your hand like snap on and they are better balanced. Check J.H. Williams web site.

I'm not familiar with the brand, but I would guess they may be somewhat collectible. I have a similar set but I don't recall a name on them so they are probably not as old nor as good quality as those you have. As I recall, the ratchet is made of plates rivited together to enclose the ratchet mechanism and the hex drive slides thru the ratchet gear so that it turns CW on one side and CCW on the other.

Hex drive has been used for 60+ years I know of. It is still used where a positive, non-slip internal drive is required, and is the standard in tool rooms. A hex drive(allen head)wrench will twist off the corners occasionally, but is usually very reliable. As referenced, Allen Fastener Co. (I think) invented this. I'ts quite interesting when you get into the whole fastener history.
