I think I'm going to have to get my first cell. Would like a pay as you go like tracphone or T-mobile? I'm not too knowledgible (I'm still on dial-up here). What's my best choice? I guess the days of a cheap phone for 19.99/mo are over? I don't want photo or text or whatever, just emergency use. Heck I only make about one long distance call per month. A co-worker has two for only 82.00/mo.!! That about a grand a year for a phone. That makes me shudder. Then again I'm a cheapskate.

I bought a trac phone at wally world. $130 for a card that gives me 1 year of service and 400 minuites and doubles the number of minuites of future cards bought within the year of coverage. Note the price of future minuites can not go below 10 cents per minuite thou. So in effect It costs about 10 dollars per month for service and 10 cents for each minuite you talk. The phone itself cost 20 dollars. There are other cards you can buy to get service and minuites on a trac phone but I thought this way was the smartest way to go. Only thing I dont like is they round up to the nearest full minuit. Also the literature that comes with the phone says roaming eats up your minuites a twice the rate but then some where else it says they have so much coverage that there is no roaming.???

Redd, check out tracfone.com, for free phone, after starter min are up you can get better card rates from someone like ambess.com

Check out STIMobile.com - I have had one of these since Christmas - seems OK - you have to have Sprint coverage in your area-they have a coverage map - it also seems good here in Southeast SD even though the map isn'ttoo great - the best part of these pay as you go phone is there is no minimum per month usage of so many minutes - the ONLY rule is if you don't use it to make 1 minute atleast once every 2 months or so - they give your number away and you have to pay $5 to get another one - I am real satisfied so far
I also did a tracfone search on google - there were a lot of unhappy people with stories....

Talk with your friends and neighbors - find out which carrier provides the best coverage in your area. We did, and went with a lesser known national company, and are getting far better service than some of our friends with the very recognized companies. (Not that there areen"t some holes in our coverage.) Very helpful if you can define the coverage area you need, to the representative when you apply. I have not heard good things about the national pay-as-you-go services in this area.

I've had a trac fone for 6 or 7 years now, and wouldn't be without it. Keep it in the truck most of the time and turn it on for the trip home from work each day. Comes in handy on trips too. There are plenty of free phones available on their website (buy a 60 day card, get a free phone), and I recently got one of those new mini phones that fits in your pocket better for $35. $95/year gets 250 minutes. If you don't use all the minutes, you just accumulate them. I had over 1000 minutes a couple years ago, but am down around 600 now after several long roaming calls.

I use a cheap old phone that someone gave me.
I use pay as you go cards to the tune of $10 a month.
I work on the Great Lakes and have met a lot of people that get trapped by a plan or get very high bills($1000 to $2000) and actually throw the phone overboard.
I recommend pay as you go until you figure out how much you will be using the phone.
Cell phones can get very expensive to the inexperienced.

I have a Trac Phone for emergency use. I got a phone, one years service and 20 minutes time for $60.00. Additional time is purchased up front. Costs about $0.50 per minute for local calls and double for roaming calls. Still I can make a lot of calls for the cost of a more expensive setup. I get voice mail and text messaging included.

I've found that I get different prices and plan information from the same company (Verizon) when I call different offices or talk to different sales people in the same office. So it pays to make lots of calls and ask lots of questions. I have had 3 phones for the family for years which get very little use since they are intended primarily for emergencies but not just 911. I'm paying $15 per month for the first one, $7.99 for another, $9.99 for the third. All of these have added fees & taxes which brings my average total monthly bill to about $45. I have been told that if I ever drop one of these plans I won't be able to get these prices again.

Redd, Try to figure out what you need, before you buy. For Me, here in Cen-Tex, 99.999% of calls are in state, very few out of state, So I don't need free nation wide calling. When I do need most of the time there are 800 #s. So Do not get sucked in on free, nites and weekends. just know when ever you talk you burn minutes.
I have T-mobles regional (Texas only) plan. 3000 minutes for $50.00/month, as a general rule my taxes run + - $16.00/month
So monthly cost is about $65.00/month allsaid,all done. I use 2400 to 2700 each month.
I am sure T-moble will have a deal that will fit you needs. Usually the base plans on anysystem will only get you in trouble. Just buy minutes an remember that. If you do need nation wide calling T-moble has a 1500 plan for $50.00/month before taxes. Hope this helps.

Pay as you go, have to be renewed every 30 or 60 days depending on which card you buy, even if you don't use them. Check th providers in your area, amny of them have low priced emergency plans, but watch out for rates that are intorductory then go up. If you are a memeber of organization such as Farm Bureau, triple A, etc, they frequently have special emergency rates for memebers.

I am using T-Mobile and I am satisfied with it in all respects. I have the Razer phone but I don't use most of its features. It was the best deal at the time.

In this new world we are living in, more and more people are trading in their land lines for cell phones. Do we really need both?

Actually, at this time, we really DO need both! Where I live service is spotty- no cell service at all here at my house....I'd hate to have to go outside and drive up to the top of the nearest hill every time just to make a phone call!
