I have a 300 gal Diesel barrel that has a small leak at the brim of the tank. Is the a special epoxy or product that I can use to patch this leak? The tank is empty now and I usually only put 100 gal of fuel in it a year.

The auto supply has gas tank sealer for steel tanks, but I don't know if it will work for diesel. Check the package. About $7.

Can you fix the leak with a screw and rubber washer?

Me, I would invest in a new tank or a few more 5 gallon plastic containers.

Like mentioned earlier, if you spill the fuel on the ground it becomes a possible hazardous material spill. Our fire department charges a minimum of $1000/hr plus materials. Yes, I do mean a thousand dollars an hour minimum. I have seen it up to $2500/hr for a major spill.

Is it worth the risk?

I had multiple leaks in the bottom of a diesel combine fuel tank from spot welds coming loose. Flipped it over, got it dry, and patched each one with JB weld. Still holding after 5+ years. Not such good luck on a gas pickup tank tho- held only a few months.

My state & insurance co get real picky about that, find 100 gallons of fuel on the ground some morning & the right people get wind of it, that's $12,000 or so in digging & monitoring - & see a seal on a bad tank & then the real questions & finger pointing starts....

Your call on that.

They make some good epoxy putties that you can use, if you can get good & clean and access to the spot. Like JBWeld, other brands designed just for fuel tanks.....

PRC MAKES A PRODUCT CALLED 1435. IT IS A TANK SEALER FOR COMMERCIAL AIRCRAFT. CLEAN THE CRACK AND AREA AROUND IT WITH ALCOHOL OR ACETONE. SMEAR THE CRACK AND ABOUT A HALF INCH AREA AROUND THE CRACK WITH 1435. WILL BE DRY IN ABOUT A HOUR DEPENDING ON TEMP. WILL HOLD FUEL FOR 20 - 30 YEARS.
