Lincoln mig circuit

I have a 30 amp circuit with 10 ga. wire running about 20 feet from the panel. I got a Lincoln 220 volt welder HD 3400 and on the box says a 20 amp circuit. I bought a receptacle to fit the plug and is a 50 amp receptacle. Could I use the existing 30 amp circuit or would I need to run a new one with bigger wire? Thanks.

Hi CBGB,

As far as running the welder is concerned, the 50 amp receptacle won't make a bit of difference. The configuration of the prongs of the plug, and the corresponding slots in the receptacle indicate that it is a 50 amp outlet rather than a 30 amp outlet. This might make it a code violation, in theory. Others on this forum can advise you more knowledgeably on this issue.

I made a number of adapters which have different configurations of plugs and receptacles so that I can deal with most combinations I encounter. Not everyone, however, has access to large numbers of discarded electric ranges as a source of short, handy cables (range pigtails.) I'm not sure I'd have made more than the one I needed to run a welder from a dryer outlet if each adaptor had run me the additional cost of heavily sheathed 6 or 8 gauge cable.
