New Florescents Buzzing ???

I asked this over on the tractor talk forum with no luck so I'll try here on tool talk. Somebody told me that if you buy a new florescent light fixture (say a double tube 4 footer for example) and you get a buzz or a humming sound from it, there is a way of getting rid of it. I can't remember who told me or what he told me so if anyone out there can help out, I'd appreciate it.

Here's what I did...

Whatch for sales at places like Home Depot. I bought inexpensice 4' T8 fixtures for less than $10 each. Replaced some of the older T12 fixtures in my garage (in COLD SE Michigan) and they work like a charm - with no buzz. Just great light. I'm thinking I should pick up a few more when they go on sale again.

Magnetic ballast make all the noise. Suggest you buy a fixture with T8 bulbs instead of T12. All T8 fixtures have electronic ballast. Some of the more expensive T12 also have electronic ballast, and are noiseless. T12 bulbs will be around for a long time, but for new fixtures are quickly being phased out. You get alot more light from a T8.

I just got new fixtures and set a few in and they take t8 or t12 bulbs and have electronic ballast for 0 degree and instant on and were not expensive.
From recomendations here.
No noise an dlots of light.

I suggest you look for fixtures with electronic ballasts; they don't buzz. At least not as bad as the older, magnetic ballasts.

When I purchased a new 8 foot florescent light the man ask if I wanted a "HO" unit. He said it was a high output for cold weather operating. It would warm up quicker, not flutter and buzz like regular florescents. They were 3 times the money in price. I am not sure if you can put HO bulbs in a regular ficture or not. I can find out if you want me too.

HO bulbs only work with lamp sockets and ballasts designed for HO
regular bulbs work with sockets and ballasts designed for them

T8 is the way to go. have seen some very good prices on them on sale at the big box stores.
