i recently bought a farm with a pond that still has algea growing about 6 ft out from the bank mostly all around the pond.i have been putting in aqua shade but it says if the algea already has a good start it probably wont do much good i guess my question is there some other product that might work better

How deep, wide & long? Water temp? Spring fed? Gravel, sand, clay or mud bottom? Shaded or in the wide open? The windmill & aerator sounds good.

The first thing you'll need to do is identify what you have, is it an algae or is it a type of aquatic weed. That makes a big difference in what works. Copper sulfate and aeration work well with algae, but don't do much good on aquatic weeds. So far I've found Reward to work well on aquatic weeds, but at $125 a gallon, it can empty your wallet in a hurry. The grass carp, sterile white amurs, work well too, provided the pond isn't too choked up. Try doing an internet search on "aquatic weed control" that should find you alot of information.

Have you thought about aeration? We use a Koender's windmill at our gun club; seems to have really cleaned up the algae.

Maybe a small fountain pump would be worth a try?

Be careful with copper sulfate because it will kill any fish if you use too much. Lack of fish could be a contributing factor.

First thing to do is to try figuring out what is feeding the algae or as the experts say ,what is loading the pond?Is it manure runoff, a nearby septic tank, cattle with access to the pond, or? Then try to eliminate the problem. The second thing to do is find some Barley straw and put some in old orange sacks and stake the straw filled sacks in the worst areas or you can use the whole bales if you can keep them where they will do the most good.Something in the Barley straw that eliminates the algae.Copper sulfate can help too by killing off those little buggers.

try applying copper sulphate in granular form around the edges of the pond. the algae will start to die off within the week.

I have a 2 acre farm pond/lake. Excellent fish - lots of bass, blue gill - I have lived here for 12 years and never seen before these large "Billowing" algea clumps around the shore in about 5 to 8 feet of water. I have an excellent areator pump /fountain, I have several large grass carp, the water is quite clear - except around these tufts of green algea. I am scared to use Copper Sulfate due to the fish kill - I have worked to long to get a great bass population, but I am at a loss for what to do about this problem.

Any Ideas?
