After using a mig with gas, I"m ready to buy one. My question s are, what does the gas do? And what"s a good, affordable size to get. Not trying to earn a living with it. The old buzz box is okay, but that mig sure is slick. Thanks, Gus.

The Millermatic 210 will not weld 1/2 or 3/4 without multi passes. You need at least a 251

Hi Gus,

At the top of this forum or in the left column, type in "weld" on search the Tool forum, then spend a few days reading as there's been a ton of good info written about welding on this forum.

I caution you about getting info from the other welding forums as you have inexperienced people teaching some wrong info.

Mig Welder ( Metal Inert Gas ) used alot in production welding, fast, no slag easy to learn how to do a decent bead quickly. Used normally for mild steel, then SS and with a spool gun or push pull gun it can be useed to weld Aluminum.

Tig Welding ( Tungsten Inert Gas ) one of the purest forms of welding. You can weld almost any metal know to man with these setups ( Cast Iron may be the exception ) It comes in a number of forms, Basic tig Scratch and then into the High end machines High Frequency / Square Wave machines. Welding is slower with this type of welding more like Brazing or Oxy Acetylene welding as you have the Tig torch and a filler rod. I have welde very , very thin Aluminum using Tig the machine I was using would dial down to something like 5 amps.

My friend and I each bought a miller 210 last year at the same time. All of a sudden it looks like we've been welding for years... You won't be unhappy. I looked real hard at the 251, but with the money I save I bought a plasma cutter...

The Gas is for sheilding the molten metal of the " puddle" from the atmosphere. The gas does the same function as the flux on stick electrodes. When a stick electrode burns the smoke sheilds the weld from the air/ atmosphere.

The Miller 210 is hard to beat, I would probably go bigger my self . You can get more information on all your questions at :

The gas shields the weld from impurities in the air, same as flux on welding rod does. I second the vote for The miller 210. I bought one last week and absolutly love it.

Very good welder friend said only Miller and 210 smallest. I then read for several weeks on the welding forum sites and found no one disappointed with a Millermatic 210. Nothing but rave reviews. Check out cyberweld.com, I found this to be the best price and service was great. After using the machine I am so very glad I saved my money and did not get a smaller machine. Good luck

I agree 100% with Your choice of welder but I've found My local welding supply shop will come VERY close to Cyberweld's price and Your going to have to buy Your cylinder & gas there anyhow....So why not let them shoot You a price on the whole setup! I bought My MIG, Plasma cutter, gas torch, and last winter My new TIG all from the same local shop.

While you guys are talking welders..tell me what the difference is between Mig and Tig...uses, etc...ie., where one is better than the other.

I have never owned a welder but want one for general use around the place...something big enough to handle common chores..say welding up to 1/2" or 3/4" plate..which would be the very thickest stuff i'd ever weld.

Mark: If you're looking for a general use welder, TIG isn't your best choice--it's more expensive to purchase the equipment, harder to learn, and slower. TIG shines when you're welding exotic metals, thin cross sections, dissimilar metals, and other specialized jobs. If you're welding up to 3/4", you're going beyond the reach (or at the very edge of the reach) of most common welders, either MIG or stick. You'll need to V-notch and fill with multiple passes in order to get full penetration on this thickness if you're using a common welder, putting out somewhere in the neighborhood of 250 amps. With regard to the differences between MIG and stick, you could write a book (and several people have, plus as T_bone mentioned there's enough material in the archives of this site to get a pretty fair start on another one) but as an executive summary MIG is a bit easier to learn (you don't have a shrinking electrode to contend with), faster (you don't have to stop to change electrodes) and cleaner (if you use shielding gas, you usually don't have to go back and chip the slag from your weld when you're done). Stick is a bit more powerful (stick machines are commonly availible up to around 600 amps, whereas most MIGs stop at about half that) more versatile (you can pick an electrode that matches the characteristics you want in your finished weld such as high penetration, high strength, or high hardness) and a bit more forgiving on weld preparation (dirty or painted metal, for instance). In general, if you're looking for an all-around welder, you'll want one that runs on 220, as the majority of the 110 welders can't go much thicker than around 1/8". In stick machines, the Lincoln AC225 is the gold standard--it's not the best nor the cheapest, but it is the most popular, with well over a million sold and many of them still working 20 or more years later. In MIGs, the Miller 210 is well known, though I don't have personal experience with the machine. Whatever you do, you're wise to spend another 10% or so and get a name-brand machine. Lincoln, Miller, and Hobart (now owned by Miller) are the "big 3", and all have good product support. When you're dealing with enough power to melt a half inch of solid steel, things are going to wear out, and saving 50 bucks on your initial purchase won't mean much when you can't get parts 5 years down the road.

Thank you both for the synopsis on these welders. I don't mean to hijack this thread...just expanding it a bit.

I said weld up to 1/2" and 3/4" plate.....yes, of course, I meant using several passes. I recently had a subsoiler welded up and we used some 3/4" mild plate for some bracing..it took 3 or 4 passes with a stick welder..no problem. You have got understand..I'm a welding retard! I want the finished work to be strong and servicable and the only things I will be doing is fixing a broken piece of farm machinery or what not. I have no qualms with spending the money up front..but no need in buying more machine than I need.

If you've got 220 where you're planning on putting the machine, you can pick up a used Lincoln AC225 for $100 or less just by watching the classifieds. If I were buying new, I'd spring for an AC/DC unit, as this will give you a bit more versatility. Street price new will be around $500. A MIG will be more money (Cyberweld's price for the 210 is $1300 plus you'll need a gas bottle and gas) and unless you're welding thin material you will not gain any additional capability by going with the MIG vs. the stick. An AC225 or similar will enable you to do 1/2" in one to two passes with good prep, and 3/4" in two to three. Provided you're not doing critical repairs like tanks, truck frames, etc. this will allow you to fix the vast majority of what you're apt to encounter in a home/farm shop. Welding is an art, but it's an enjoyable pastime as well, and is an essential skill for any fabricator.
