I was given some 1 1/2" partical board. I would like to use it on the level portion of my wheel chair ramp. It will be outdoors. What can I treat it with to make it last? This stuff is like the under lament for flooring.
Thanks.

Hi ww,

Can you trade the 1-1/2 PB for something you can use?

Even without moisture, here in Arizona PB will self destruct because of the heat. The heat dries out the glue then it just falls apart, about 15yrs if sealed, shorter if not sealed.

PB is pretty much worthless stuff.

The only thing that I can think of would be fiberglass resin. For duability, include the fiberglass webbing.

The others are right about partical board and moisture equaling mush. But, if it's completely incased in something durable like fiberglass... just might work. I've never tried that one before, but can get 3x3 pieces of webbing and resin from many autopart stores. And having worked in a couple fiberglass boat factories back in the '70's, we used to enclose the wood stringers in the hulls with fiberglass. Not only waterproofed, it strengthened enough for side-by-side V8 Chevys and choppy waves. I remember running heavy steel wheeled dollies over the same spilled and hardened puddles on concrete for many years. Very durable.

Good luck, Mark

Sir , you can coat that sawdust board with everything going & it'll still turn into wet sawdustmush . That's why it's labeled interior . I was in the building business for 25 yrs & made several wheelchair accesss areas with ramps . The longest lasting material made for outside decks is the treated lumber . With the seperations between each board, the water with leave that area faster . Use that partical board inside only . Good luck , Ken

I'll warn you about the treated lumber . Always before screwing it down , check grain at the end of each board . You want to fasten each board down with the grain cupping down onto your frame works . If you don't as it dries it'll cup up making a place for water to lay . Next this wood tends to be slippery in the rain . So what I always did was let it dry a couple days & then come back with the thick sandy sheets (not the rubber ones either) of tread pads that are made for stairs & running boards of vehicles . I try to get the ones about 3" wide & as long as possible . These have adhesive on the back . Now lay a piece of that in the center of each board . Saves on law suits if one slips & falls . Believe me, there's alot of these lawyers pushing these sue happy jerks out there .Good luck & you're welcome . ken
