Last week I went to the farm to do some work and could not get one of the barn doors open. These are folding overhead doors a few years old but were working fine. Door wont budge, has chain pull. Everthing looks ok, We had a lot of wind two weeks ago ?? any ideas?

Thanks for all the info, will double check soon, Dont think its frozen on the bottom, but anything is possible. Good old Mother Mature.

Rollers wedged on bolts, very carfuly check the cable and make sure it is where it belongs. Usualy a assistant can nudge the door while the other looks for where it is binding. You can avoid alot of freezing down by applying vasoline jelly to the bottom once it is dry. The type of spring you have will help narrow the thought pattern for us. Exactly how much you can lift it before it binds, if it tends to be on one corner etc. The more detailed the better. I have seen where the top of the door was under the top door frame a little. I'm sure you thought of this, but one time I had trouble lifting an overhead door, so I really reefed on the inside handle. The door suddenly went up, but I managed to rip the whole rubber door seal off the bottom of the door. Apparently it had been very wet when that door was last closed and then it got cold. The door seal froze down to the concrete the full length of the door.

When I closed the door, of course it came back down on the frozen rubber seal. Later when everything thawed out, I renailed the seal back to the bottom of the door and it worked fine for years after that.

I was a little more careful about applying heavy force after that and one other time when the same door froze down, I thawed it with a bucket of hot water. Good luck!

I could see all the rollers and track everything looked ok, but i plan to get a ladder and look closer this weekend. Wondering if the whole thing is bent on top and hitting the frame, reports of 80 mile hr winds. thanks Lou

Doors bend in the wind. in reply to Lou, 02-28-2006 12:32:41
Those doors can bend enough to pull the rollers clear out of the track, but more likely one or more rollers is now crooked in the track. You could try to locate the problem with a ladder or even some binoculars. If you are really unlucky, several parts got sprung.
